The short answer

The NBA opened Tuesday, October 20, and no baseball landed on it: the ALCS ended Monday the 19th when the Rays beat Cleveland 7-3 at Tropicana Field, so the Game 7 slot went unused, and St. Petersburg has no NBA team anyway. Banner night in New York was clean, and the 76ers won it 106-100. The World Series runs October 23 to 31, Brewers against Rays, and Milwaukee is the only Series city with an NBA building. That made one collision certain, and it has now been played: the Bucks opened at home against the Bulls on Friday, October 23, the day American Family Field hosted World Series Game 1, a 3-2 Brewers win. The Bucks moved that tip to 3 p.m. on October 16 so the two did not overlap, which changed the evening and not the room rate. Milwaukee won the Series 4-1 on Wednesday the 28th, 4-1 at Tropicana Field, so the Halloween Game 7 next to Cavs-Bucks at Fiserv Forum was never played and the 31st in Milwaukee is a Bucks game, a convention and a costume night. Most openers price like a normal Tuesday. Three didn’t: Milwaukee on the 23rd, the Garden on the 20th, and Austin on Formula 1 weekend. Cleveland came off that list on the 19th. A Guardians pennant would have put World Series baseball one plaza from two Cavs home dates, and it did not happen, so the 26th and 28th at Rocket Arena are ordinary arena nights and any hold you were carrying against them can go.

The slate, night by night

Every game below is on the league’s own schedule release, with the host arena as the league lists it. Times are Eastern.

Two things on that table are easy to skim past. The Spurs are home twice in four days in two different cities. And the Knicks play the 76ers twice in eleven days, once with a banner going up, once with an NBA Cup group game on the line.

The offseason that built the table, briefly. Philadelphia traded for Jaylen Brown in early July (Paul George and picks to Boston) and signed LeBron James as a free agent on July 26. Milwaukee sent Giannis Antetokounmpo to Miami on July 6. Minnesota landed LaMelo Ball from Charlotte in a four-team deal on July 10. Every one of those debuts lands in the first three nights.

Where the two calendars touch

Here is the MLB ladder as the league published it, which is the part of this piece that matters for a hotel search.

The Division Series ran October 3 to 10. The NLCS opened Sunday, October 11 and finished in four on Thursday the 15th. The ALCS opened Monday, October 12 and finished in six on Monday the 19th, so the Game 7 slot on Tuesday, October 20, which is NBA opening night, went unused. Then two dark days, October 21 and 22, which happen to be the two ESPN doubleheaders. The World Series started Friday, October 23: Game 1 Friday (played, Brewers 3, Rays 2), Game 2 Saturday the 24th (played, Brewers 5, Rays 4), off Sunday, Game 3 Monday the 26th (played, Brewers 10, Rays 1), Game 4 Tuesday the 27th (played, Rays 4, Brewers 3 in 12 innings, Milwaukee leads 3-1), Game 5 Wednesday the 28th (played, Brewers 4, Rays 1, Milwaukee wins the Series 4-1), and the Game 6 and Game 7 posted for Friday the 30th and Saturday, October 31 not played. The pennant winner with the better regular-season record hosts Games 1, 2, 6 and 7, which this year is Milwaukee at 103-59. The other club hosts 3, 4 and 5. Every one of the seven was posted at 8 p.m. ET on FOX by MLB on October 16, so 7 p.m. CT for the Milwaukee games.

So the overlap has a shape. October 20 was a one-night LCS exposure that never fired. October 23 through 31 is a nine-day window in which every NBA home date in a World Series city sits on or next to a baseball night, and there is now exactly one such city.

Both halves are resolved. Milwaukee played NLCS Games 1 and 2 on October 11 and 12 and swept the series in four, so its October 18 and 19 dates never happened and its next home game was World Series Game 1 on the 23rd, which it won 3-2. On the American League side, rain postponed Game 4 on Friday the 16th before a pitch, MLB renumbered, Tampa Bay won the replayed Game 4 7-3 in Cleveland on Saturday the 17th and Game 5 there 3-1 on Sunday the 18th, and then closed it at Tropicana Field 7-3 on Monday the 19th, per MLB’s box score. Rays in six. So the Series’ middle three games, October 26 to 28, are in a Florida city with no NBA team at all, and Cleveland’s two Cavs dates that week are just Cavs dates.

The field narrowed hard, and in the direction that makes this page more useful. The Wild Card round put out the Astros, Red Sox, Cubs and Phillies. Eight clubs opened the Division Series on Saturday, October 3. By the end of Wednesday, October 7, three series were over and five clubs were left.

Game 1 went to the home side everywhere. Tampa Bay beat the Yankees 1-0 at Tropicana Field on a Jonathan Aranda home run off Gerrit Cole, with Drew Rasmussen going eight scoreless and striking out ten; New York managed one hit, the fewest in a postseason game in franchise history. Chicago shut out Cleveland 3-0 at Progressive Field behind a two-run Munetaka Murakami homer, the White Sox’s first postseason shutout since they finished off the 2005 World Series. Milwaukee beat San Diego 3-2 and Los Angeles beat Atlanta 5-3.

Game 2 moved three of the four. Atlanta won 3-2 at Dodger Stadium on Sunday to even that series at 1-1. Milwaukee went up 2-0 the same afternoon when Jackson Chourio hit a two-run walk-off single off Mason Miller, 4-3. On Monday the Rays beat the Yankees 5-2 for a 2-0 lead, and the White Sox beat the Guardians 4-3 in Cleveland for the same.

Game 3 split the National League. Los Angeles won 3-1 in Atlanta on Tuesday and San Diego beat Milwaukee 4-3 at Petco the same night. Then Wednesday: Cleveland beat the White Sox 9-3 at Rate Field to cut the deficit to 2-1, and the Dodgers finished Atlanta 4-1 at Truist Park to win their series 3-1, the first club into a championship series. Cleveland won again on Thursday, 9-5, which squared that series.

How the round ended, Eastern times. Wednesday night the 7th finished two more series: Rays 4, Yankees 3 at Yankee Stadium, a 3-0 sweep, and Brewers 3, Padres 1 at Petco Park, a 3-1 series. Thursday the 8th: Cleveland won 9-5 at Rate Field, which tied the last series 2-2. Friday the 9th: nothing. Then Game 5 on Saturday the 10th at Progressive Field. Cleveland won it 2-0 on a two-run José Ramírez homer in the fourth and took the series 3-2 after dropping the first two games at home, the first 0-2 comeback in a Division Series since 2017. Chicago is out.

That left four clubs: Milwaukee, Los Angeles, Tampa Bay and Cleveland. The NLCS opened Sunday the 11th in Milwaukee and ended Thursday the 15th in Los Angeles, a Brewers sweep. The ALCS opened Monday the 12th in St. Petersburg and ended there on Monday the 19th, Rays in six. Of the two clubs left, Tampa Bay has no NBA team and Milwaukee shares a downtown with one.

Cleveland was the only pair close enough to change your evening, and it went out two wins short. The Guardians, the AL’s 2 seed at 85-77, lost both home games to Chicago, 3-0 on Saturday the 3rd and 4-3 on Monday the 5th, then won three in a row: 9-3 and 9-5 at Rate Field, then 2-0 back home in Game 5. Their ALCS home dates were drawn for October 15, 16 and 17 and the rainout turned them into the 15th, 17th and 18th. The Cavs do not play at home until the 24th, so every one of those nights was baseball-only at Gateway, and the Series never came back. Milwaukee’s three miles is a different kind of problem and the one that actually bites this year: too far to share a sidewalk, close enough to share every hotel. The two Gateway buildings share a plaza and the same garages, and the Gateway East Garage, the one with the climate-controlled bridge into the arena at level three, sells advance passes only on nights when the arena and the ballpark both have events. Show up planning to pay at the gate and you won’t get in.

The Wild Card round deleted the two tightest pairs this piece started with. Citizens Bank Park sits 0.45 miles from the 76ers’ building in one shared sea of South Philadelphia surface lots, and Daikin Park is a fifteen-minute walk from Toyota Center across the east side of downtown Houston, about 0.6 miles. Both clubs are out. So are Fenway, 2.2 miles from TD Garden, and Wrigley, 4.8 miles from the United Center. Chicago’s remaining pair went out with the White Sox on the 10th, so Rate Field and the United Center are off this page for the year. Of what’s left, Cleveland and Milwaukee are the two where both crowds shop the same downtown rooms.

Night by night: where a collision is possible

Settled now. Milwaukee won the National League pennant on October 15, sweeping the Dodgers, so Games 1, 2, 6 and 7 are at American Family Field. Tampa Bay won the American League on October 19, beating Cleveland 7-3 at Tropicana Field to take the ALCS 4-2, so Games 3, 4 and 5 are in St. Petersburg.

Brewers 103-59, pennant winners. Rays 98-64, pennant winners. Out: Guardians 85-77 on Monday the 19th, Dodgers 100-62 on Thursday the 15th, White Sox 84-78 on Saturday the 10th, and Braves 94-68, Yankees 93-68 and Padres 91-71 on Wednesday the 7th.

The record rule did the rest: Games 1, 2, 6 and 7 go to the pennant winner with the better regular-season record, and 103-59 beats 98-64. So the board is four dates locked to Milwaukee and three dates in St. Petersburg, which does not have a basketball team. One more thing, and it is what makes the nights below readable at all: MLB posted the Series clocks on October 16, and they are identical. Every game is 8 p.m. ET, 7 p.m. CT in Milwaukee. So most of what follows is a collision of hotel nights. On Halloween it would have been a collision of first pitch and tip, in the same hour, and the Series ended before it got there.

Tuesday, October 20, no baseball. The ALCS Game 7 posted for this date needed Cleveland to win Game 6 on Monday the 19th, and the Rays won it 7-3, so the slot went unused. It would have been in St. Petersburg anyway, where Tampa Bay has no NBA team. Exactly one version of this night ever collided with an NBA home date: Yankees-White Sox, the Bronx hosting while the Knicks raised a banner six and a half miles south. Both of those clubs are out, the Yankees swept on the 7th and Chicago beaten in Game 5 on the 10th. So banner night is clean on the baseball side. That one is settled. The National League can’t touch opening night either: its series ended on the 15th, four days early.

Friday, October 23, World Series Game 1. Played, and the pulled-apart clocks held. The Brewers beat the Rays 3-2 at American Family Field for a 1-0 series lead, and the Bucks opened their home season against the Bulls at Fiserv Forum the same afternoon, three miles apart, in a downtown with a small hotel bench. The caveat this page had been carrying was that an NBA tip can move for broadcast and that a World Series opener in the same city is exactly the reason it might. On October 16 it moved. The Bucks took the opener from 7 p.m. to 3 p.m., said they were doing it “in celebration of” the Brewers hosting Game 1 and the club’s first Series in 44 years, and thanked the NBA for making the change possible.

Both ran as posted: the 3 p.m. tip, then a first pitch at 7:16 p.m. CT with 43,250 in the ballpark, per MLB’s box score. One building emptied about ninety minutes before the other filled. No shared rideshare queue.

The room was a separate question and the move cut both ways on it. A matinee is easier to drive home from, so some Bulls fans who would have stayed over after a 7 p.m. game didn’t, and the ones who wanted to watch Game 1 in a Milwaukee bar did. Either way the thing pricing that Friday was World Series Game 1, not a season opener. Los Angeles came off this line on the 15th, so the Clippers-Lakers game at Crypto.com Arena is a plain basketball night. Boston is clean too, Celtics at home with the Red Sox out.

Saturday, October 24, World Series Game 2. Played, Brewers 5-4 to go up 2-0, and the Bucks were away. That was the single luckiest piece of scheduling in this window: Milwaukee hosted World Series Game 2 while the Bucks were in Philadelphia, so the downtown absorbed one event instead of two on back-to-back nights. The call here was to book the 23rd and 24th as one reservation anyway, because a Friday-Saturday minimum-stay rule was likely regardless and a split booking moves you between hotels on Saturday morning. Elsewhere: the Hawks’ home opener against the Rockets is clean with Atlanta out, Cleveland’s Cavs home opener against the Nets is safe because the Guardians can only draw Games 3 through 5, and the Bulls’ United Center debut against Washington is just a basketball game now the White Sox are out.

Monday, October 26, Game 3. This was the night, and it is not any more. A Cleveland pennant would have meant Games 3, 4 and 5 at Progressive Field, with the Cavs hosting Minnesota on the 26th one plaza over. Same garages, same bars, two ticketed crowds, 0.16 miles, the most compressed night on the American sports calendar this month. The Guardians needed two straight wins at Tropicana Field to make it happen and got neither: Tampa Bay won Game 6 7-3 on Monday the 19th and took the series 4-2. Game 3 was in St. Petersburg, and Milwaukee won it 10-1.

So the 26th in Cleveland was an ordinary Monday with a Cavs game on it, which is a night the hotels already priced in August. If you held it refundable on this page’s advice, the hold did its job and cost nothing to drop. Milwaukee hosted Indiana the same evening and it was clean, because the Brewers were away.

Tuesday, October 27, World Series Game 4. Played, Rays 4-3 in 12 innings. Pistons at Knicks at the Garden went off with the Bronx hosting nothing, because the Yankees went out on the 7th. Blazers at Lakers was a plain basketball night with Los Angeles eliminated. The baseball was in St. Petersburg, where nobody shares a plaza with anyone, and the Rays kept the Series alive past midnight, 3-1 Milwaukee.

Wednesday, October 28, World Series Game 5. Played, Brewers 4-1, and the Series is over. Wizards at Cavs was a plain basketball night; the Game 5 that would have been next door was in Florida, and Milwaukee won it to take the Series 4-1. Knicks at Bulls was clean: Rate Field is finished for the year and the United Center hosted a basketball game and nothing else. Heat at Hawks was clean, Braves out. Rockets at Bucks was clean, because the Brewers were away for Games 3 through 5. No city in the league had a question on the 28th.

Friday, October 30, no World Series Game 6. The Rays lost on the Wednesday, so the Game 6 posted for American Family Field was never played. First NBA Cup night, and the Bucks are not home. The city is not empty: GalaxyCon is listed at the downtown Baird Center from the 30th through November 1, listed rather than confirmed because one aggregator still shows a cancelled flag while tickets sell, and it is now the only convention-scale demand on that downtown for the weekend. Elsewhere, Knicks at 76ers is a clean Cup Friday with the Phillies out, and Pistons at Nets in Brooklyn is clean too.

Saturday, October 31, no World Series Game 7. The worst night on the board, and it did not happen. Cavaliers at Bucks at Fiserv Forum at 7 p.m., on Halloween, with a convention listed downtown, and no baseball: the winner-take-all game that would have thrown its first pitch three miles west in the same hour was never played, because the Brewers won the Series in five on the Wednesday. Both clocks had been posted at 7 p.m. CT, the tip on the NBA’s own game page for the date and the first pitch in MLB’s October 16 release, and the Bucks had taken their October 23 opener off 7 p.m. for Game 1, which was the precedent for the league doing it again on a Game 7 night. File the shape for the next October Milwaukee is alive in. The refundable room held against this night can go; a 24-hour window on it closes Friday afternoon, after the result.

What this actually does to a room

We’ve made the case elsewhere that a regular-season arena night rarely moves a hotel market, and nothing about opening week changes the arithmetic. Eighteen thousand mostly local fans don’t compress a metro. The collision matters because the baseball side does.

A World Series night is a compression night, the term revenue managers (the people who set hotel rates) use for a date when one event pushes every property in a comp set toward sellout at once. Visiting fans, media, league staff, corporate groups: that demand shows up in the pickup pace weeks out, and the response is mechanical. Minimum length-of-stay controls go on, the discounted rate categories get closed, and the refundable rates you’d want are the first to disappear. A fan flying in for the Cavs’ Monday game against Minnesota is shopping the same downtown Cleveland inventory that Game 3 already took.

The reverse is also true, and it’s the useful part. Where the World Series can’t be, opening week is priced like any October Tuesday. Detroit on the 20th. Miami, Oklahoma City and San Antonio all week. Los Angeles the whole window, as of October 15. Boston for the Celtics’ opener on the 23rd, Philadelphia for the Sixers’ home games on the 24th, 25th and 30th, Houston all month, all clean since the Wild Card round. Chicago joined them on the 10th, so the Bulls’ home opener on the 24th and the Knicks game on the 28th are plain United Center nights, and Cleveland joined them on the 19th, so the Cavs’ games on the 26th and 28th are plain Rocket Arena nights. If you held a refundable room in any of those cities against a baseball collision, the collision is gone. Release it rather than letting the cutoff do it for you.

One exception has nothing to do with baseball. The Spurs-Rockets game is in Austin, on the University of Texas campus, on the Friday of the United States Grand Prix, October 23 to 25. That weekend takes over the whole city, and a fan who books it as a basketball trip is booking into a market that F1 priced months ago.

What to book, by which fan you are

Knicks banner night, October 20, has been played (76ers 106-100). The Garden guide has the neighborhood calls for the October 25 and 27 home dates. If you’re a Knicks fan who also follows the Yankees, the one bracket that could have put an ALCS Game 7 in the Bronx on banner night died on the 7th when the Rays swept, and the Game 7 slot now belongs to Tropicana Field. No baseball in New York on October 20. Manhattan rooms are priced on the banner and the Greenbuild convention alone.

Here is what that Manhattan inventory looked like on Saturday, October 10, ten days out. We opened the dated detail page for every candidate hotel near the Garden, two nights, check-in Monday the 19th and check-out Wednesday the 21st. Ten properties returned no availability at all. The list includes three of the closest well-reviewed rooms to the building: the Renaissance New York Midtown on West 35th, the Henn na a few doors down on the same block, and the Fairfield Inn by Penn Station on West 33rd, whose own page describes it as adjacent to the arena.

Then we isolated the night. EVEN Hotel New York Times Square South sits 984 feet from the Garden. It has nothing for the single night of Tuesday the 20th to Wednesday the 21st, while its own alternate-dates panel will sell you Sunday the 18th to Monday the 19th, or Monday the 19th to Tuesday the 20th at roughly double the Sunday price. Carlton Arms over in Gramercy reads the same way: the event span gone, the 18th to the 19th open, the 25th to the 26th open and back in an ordinary band. So the night that is actually sold out is Tuesday, October 20, three blocks from the arena, ten days ahead. Monday the 19th is still bookable and already priced well above a normal October Monday. The following weekend is normal money again.

Greenbuild is the other half of that stack. The green-building conference runs at the Javits Center from October 20 through the 23rd, which drops a convention crowd into Midtown West and Hudson Yards on banner night, shopping the same blocks of hotels. Event listings for the show advertise more than 10,000 attendees. One caveat on all of it: availability moves. Blocks get released, cancellations roll back in, and nothing above is a promise that we are watching the Garden’s inventory for you day by day. It is what the dated pages said on October 10.

Anyone going to a Bucks or Cavs game between October 23 and 31. Milwaukee is the one metro left with a live club and an NBA building. Cleveland cleared on the 19th, Los Angeles on the 15th, Chicago on the 10th, Atlanta and New York on the 7th. Milwaukee is not a hedge any more: World Series Game 1 and the Bucks’ opener are both played (October 23, a 3-2 Brewers win and a 3 p.m. tip), Saturday the 24th for World Series Game 2 is played too, and the 30th and 31st holds died on Wednesday the 28th when the Brewers closed the Series in St. Petersburg. The Cavs-Bucks game on the 31st is an ordinary arena night with a convention and Halloween next to it; book it like one. Cleveland is not a hedge either, any more: Tampa Bay won its fourth ALCS game on Monday, October 19, so the Cavs dates on the 26th and 28th are ordinary arena nights and you can book them like one. The refundable-rate playbook covers the mechanics. Set the cancellation cutoff in your phone the day you book; a “24-hour” policy is measured from check-in time, so a Saturday room usually has to be released by Friday afternoon.

A crew of four or more doing a two-game weekend. This is where a rental earns its place, and the two candidate weekends now sit on opposite sides of the risk line. The Sixers host Saturday the 24th and Sunday the 25th with no baseball exposure left in Philadelphia, so that one you can book outright: a whole-place rental across two or three nights splits cheaper per head than three hotel rooms, and multi-night is exactly where rental math beats hotel math. The Cavs host Monday the 26th and Wednesday the 28th, which were the two likeliest World Series nights in Cleveland until the Guardians lost the ALCS on the 19th. That exposure is gone, so the Cleveland weekend moved to the same side of the line as Philadelphia: book the house outright if the all-in number works. The reason this page said to wait still applies to any night that depends on a result, because rental cancellation terms are tighter than a refundable hotel rate almost everywhere. Run the all-in number before you switch either way, too, because a cleaning fee and a service fee on a two-night stay can eat the per-head saving that made the rental look good. Inside New York City proper, Local Law 18 has effectively removed whole-apartment rentals; the Garden guide covers the Jersey City and Hoboken workaround.

Austin, October 23. Treat it as an F1 booking and use the Grand Prix guide. Round Rock and San Marcos are the overflow when the city is gone.

Everywhere else. Book whenever. Detroit, Miami, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Boston, Philadelphia, Houston, Atlanta and Chicago have no World Series exposure left, so their openers price like any October night unless a convention says otherwise. Two minutes on the city’s convention calendar is still worth it.

What changes, and when

This page was rebuilt on Thursday, October 15, after Milwaukee won the National League pennant, and one branch closed with it. The NLCS ended in four, so the games posted for October 16, 18 and 19 will not be played, Los Angeles comes off every line above, and World Series Games 1, 2, 6 and 7 belong to Milwaukee. That is what turned the Bucks’ home opener from a maybe into a certainty.

Then on Friday, October 16 the opener’s clock moved, which is the one thing on this page that was a prediction and is now a fact. The Bucks announced a 3 p.m. tip in place of 7 p.m., in celebration of Game 1, with the league’s sign-off; the release is on the team’s own site, and Fox6 Milwaukee and Yahoo Sports both carried the full statement that morning. The October 31 game against Cleveland is still 7 p.m. and nothing above it changed.

The American League branch closed on Monday, October 19. Tampa Bay won Game 4 in Cleveland 7-3 on the 17th, Game 5 there 3-1 on Sunday the 18th, and Game 6 at Tropicana Field 7-3 on the 19th, series 4-2. A Rays pennant sends Games 3 through 5 to a city with no NBA team and clears both Cleveland nights, which is what happened. The Guardians pennant that would have put World Series baseball one plaza from Cavs home dates on the 26th and the 28th needed two straight wins in Florida and got none. A Cavs fan knew the night before the Knicks raised their banner.

The last open question on this page closed the Friday before that. MLB posted the World Series start times on October 16 and made all seven games 8 p.m. ET on FOX, 7 p.m. CT for the four in Milwaukee, which is what turns October 31 from a shared date into a shared hour. Checked October 17 against MLB’s own World Series FAQ and the October 16 announcement coverage at theScore and Yahoo Sports, and the Bucks’ 7 p.m. CT October 31 tip against the NBA’s game page for the date and the AXS listing. Re-checked October 18 after ALCS Game 5: the 3-1 Rays win and the 3-2 series lead off ESPN’s box score. Re-checked October 19 after ALCS Game 6: the 7-3 Rays win, the 4-2 series and the 30,230 attendance off MLB’s Stats API box score, the scoring summary off Yahoo Sports’ game story. Re-checked October 23 after World Series Game 1: Brewers 3, Rays 2, Milwaukee leading 1-0, the 43,250 attendance and the 8:16 p.m. ET first pitch off MLB’s Stats API box score and cross-checked against the series’ Wikipedia page, which also carries the Game 2 probables, Drew Rasmussen and Logan Henderson; MLB.com’s schedule page refused the fetch on the 23rd. Re-checked October 24 after World Series Game 2: Brewers 5, Rays 4, Milwaukee leading 2-0, the 43,245 attendance and the 8:09 p.m. ET first pitch off MLB’s Stats API linescore and live feed. Re-checked October 26 after World Series Game 3: Brewers 10, Rays 1, Milwaukee leading 3-0, the 40,388 attendance and the three-hour game time off MLB’s Stats API linescore and box score. Re-checked October 28 after World Series Game 4: Rays 4, Brewers 3 in 12 innings, Milwaukee leading 3-1, the 40,514 attendance, the 8:08 p.m. ET first pitch and the 4 hour 20 minute game time off MLB’s Stats API live feed. Re-checked late October 28 after World Series Game 5: Brewers 4, Rays 1, Milwaukee winning the Series 4-1, the 40,489 attendance, the 8:08 p.m. ET first pitch and the 3 hour 5 minute game time off MLB’s Stats API live feed and linescore, with Games 6 and 7 gone from the Stats API schedule. The MLB playoff race page carries the baseball side day by day.

Highest score of the three at the middle price band. Hell's Kitchen on West 38th, ten minutes on foot to the Garden, or 2,250 feet to Penn Station by Booking's count. When we priced it on October 10 only the suites carried a free-cancel rate and a destination fee sat on every night, so assume the entry rooms sell non-refundable on a Garden night.

FAQ

When is NBA opening night 2026?

Tuesday, October 20, 2026, with an NBC and Peacock tripleheader: Celtics at Pistons at 3 p.m. ET, 76ers at Knicks at 7 p.m. ET, and Thunder at Spurs at Frost Bank Center at 9:30 p.m. ET. The Knicks received their championship rings and raised the banner before the 7 p.m. tip, then lost 106-100 to Philadelphia.

Does NBA opening week overlap the 2026 World Series?

Yes, and one of the overlaps is now certain. The World Series runs October 23 to 31, with games Friday the 23rd, Saturday the 24th, Monday the 26th, Tuesday the 27th, Wednesday the 28th, Friday the 30th, and Saturday the 31st, and MLB posted the clocks on October 16: all seven games start at 8 p.m. ET on FOX, which is 7 p.m. CT in Milwaukee. Milwaukee won the National League pennant on October 15, so World Series Game 1 was at American Family Field on Friday, October 23, the same day as the Bucks' home opener against the Bulls at Fiserv Forum; the Brewers won it 3-2. The two did not overlap: on October 16 the Bucks moved the tip from 7 p.m. to 3 p.m. so the arena cleared before first pitch, with the NBA's permission and in the club's words 'in celebration of' the Brewers hosting Game 1, and both ran as posted. The Halloween collision never came: the Brewers won World Series Game 5 4-1 at Tropicana Field on Wednesday, October 28 and took the Series 4-1, so the Game 7 posted for Saturday, October 31, which would have thrown its first pitch at 7 p.m. CT in the same hour the Bucks host Cleveland three miles east, was not played. Opening night itself, October 20, is clear: the ALCS ended on the 19th when Tampa Bay beat Cleveland 7-3 for the pennant, so the Game 7 slot was never used, and St. Petersburg has no NBA team in any case. The two off days between, October 21 and 22, belong to the NBA.

Which NBA arenas sit closest to a World Series ballpark?

Cleveland, and nothing else is close: Rocket Arena and Progressive Field share one plaza, 0.16 miles apart, and the Cavaliers are home on October 26 and 28, two of the three dates a Guardians pennant would have put World Series baseball there. The Guardians lost the ALCS on October 19, so those are ordinary Cavs nights. Milwaukee is the one that definitely matters at 3.0 miles, American Family Field to Fiserv Forum, with Bucks home dates on October 23 and 31. Los Angeles was 2.6 miles and is out. Tampa Bay has no NBA team. Among the clubs already eliminated, Chicago was 4.1 miles from the United Center to Rate Field, New York 6.5 from the Garden to Yankee Stadium, and Atlanta 10.1. All straight-line, computed from venue coordinates.

Do NBA opening-week games make hotels more expensive?

Almost never on their own. An arena crowd is mostly local, and 41 home dates are baseline demand hotels already price in. The nights that behave differently in this window are the Knicks' banner night at Madison Square Garden, the Rockets-Spurs game in Austin on Formula 1 weekend, and any night a World Series game shares a city with an NBA home date. Exactly one of those happened: October 23 in Milwaukee, where the Bucks' home opener and World Series Game 1 fell on the same date. The Bucks moved that tip to 3 p.m. on October 16 so the two events did not share an evening, which solved the traffic without solving the room supply. The other possible one, Halloween in Milwaukee, depended on the Series going seven, and it went five: the Brewers won it at Tropicana Field on Wednesday, October 28, so Cavs-Bucks on the 31st is a plain arena night. The Cleveland ones died with the Guardians on October 19.

Why is the Spurs-Rockets game on October 23 in Austin?

The Spurs host the Rockets at Moody Center on the University of Texas campus at 9:30 p.m. ET on Prime Video, the league's own listing for the game. That Friday is also the first day of the 2026 United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas, October 23 to 25, which is Austin's biggest hotel weekend of the year. Treat the room like an F1 room, not a basketball room.

When does the 2026 NBA Cup start, and is it in Las Vegas?

Group play opens Friday, October 30, and runs on Fridays through November 27, with two extra Cup nights on Tuesday, November 24 and Wednesday, November 25. Quarterfinals are December 4 and 5 and semifinals December 8 and 9, all in team arenas. The championship is December 11 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the first year the final is not in Las Vegas. October 30's Cup games include Knicks at 76ers.
