The short answer
In most of the cities that host the NHL’s 32 teams and the NBA’s 30, a regular-season game night does nothing to hotel prices. An 18,000-seat arena playing 41 home dates to a mostly local crowd can’t compress a metro with tens of thousands of rooms. Book late without guilt, except on the specific nights below. Those are real, and they’re bookable now.
Run the numbers the hotels already ran
Every page-one result for “hotels near Ball Arena” is a listing grid that quietly implies you’d better hurry. Nobody runs the arithmetic. So here it is.
An NFL Sunday is 60,000 to 80,000 people, eight or nine times a year, with a traveling fanbase that flew in Friday and needs two nights. That’s a demand wall a hotel market can see coming, and it prices accordingly. We’ve written about what that machine does to a genuinely sold-out weekend, and none of it is exaggerated.
An arena is a different animal. NHL buildings hold 15,000 to 21,000, and Montreal’s Bell Centre is the only one that tops 21,000. The NBA runs the same footprint. And where football concentrates its demand into a handful of Sundays, the 2026-27 NHL season gives every team 42 home dates (it’s an 84-game season now, the first since 1993-94) and the NBA gives every team 41. Same total crowd as football, roughly, spread across five times as many nights.
Now the part the listing sites skip: almost nobody in that crowd needs a bed. Arena crowds are season-ticket holders and locals who drove. But run the absurd worst case anyway. Say every one of 19,500 seats at a Nuggets game held an out-of-towner, and they doubled up two to a room. That’s under 10,000 rooms. The Denver metro counted about 44,000 hotel rooms back in 2015, per hotel consultancy HVS, and it has added thousands since. The real out-of-town share of a Tuesday Avs crowd wouldn’t fill one convention hotel.
Revenue managers, the people who set hotel rates, have a name for the nights that break a market: compression nights, when one event pushes every property toward sellout at once. Forty-one game nights a year are the opposite of that. They’re baseline demand, already priced into every rate you’ll ever see. The software doesn’t flinch at a Wednesday against the Blue Jackets, and neither should you.
Which means the trip is cheap, and nobody tells you that
Here’s what falls out of the arithmetic. A regular-season NHL or NBA road trip is the best travel value in American sports. You’re buying a hotel night at ordinary business-travel rates, in winter, which is the soft season for leisure pricing in most of these cities anyway. The NHL hub and NBA hub cover all 62 buildings with the walkable neighborhoods for each.
The decisions that actually move your bill on an arena trip are logistics, not timing. Downtown or airport corridor is the big one for a night game, and we published the night-game math on that call yesterday. Ticket price is the other, and midweek arena tickets are their own soft market.
So for maybe 75 of a team’s 83 combined dates in a shared building, book whenever you want. The rest of this piece is about the other handful.
Exception 1: the convention calendar outranks the schedule
When a fan pays a shocking rate for an arena night, the arena is almost never the reason. Something else is in town.
Las Vegas is the cleanest demonstration in the league. T-Mobile Arena seats 17,500 for hockey and sits directly behind the New York-New York and Park MGM resorts, so the room and the venue are a ten-minute walk apart through Toshiba Plaza. The market around it holds roughly 150,000 rooms, per the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. No hockey game will ever compress that. CES will. The tech show runs January 6 to 9, 2027, brings north of 140,000 attendees, and reprices the entire Strip at conference rates for a week. A Golden Knights ticket during CES week costs the same as ever. The bed next to the arena does not.
The same collision runs at smaller scale anywhere an arena shares its downtown with a convention center, which is most of them. Houston’s Toyota Center sits beside the convention district. Capital One Arena shares Penn Quarter with DC’s event calendar. The habit that protects you costs two minutes: before you book any arena night, search the city’s convention calendar for your exact dates. A weird rate on a random Tuesday is a citywide event telling on itself, and with 41 home dates to choose from, the fix is usually just picking a different game.
Exception 2: the hotel-thin arena districts
A few arenas have almost no hotels near them at all, and there the game-night effect is real but different. You won’t pay more. You’ll stay farther away, because the tiny walkable supply gets claimed first on any big Saturday.
Ottawa is the textbook case. The Canadian Tire Centre sits 25 minutes west of downtown in suburban Kanata with a handful of hotels beside it; when those go, you’re commuting from the ByWard Market. Raleigh’s Lenovo Center sits in a parking-lot complex with no walkable rooms, so everyone stays downtown and drives. The Islanders’ UBS Arena at Belmont Park has almost nothing adjacent, and the play is the LIRR from wherever you’re actually sleeping. In markets like these, booking early buys you geography. Everywhere else it mostly buys you nothing.
Exception 3: the ten nights a year that behave like events
Some arena dates stop being arena dates. These are the ones worth booking refundable the day you know they exist.
Home openers, when there’s a story. The NHL opens September 29 this season, the NBA on October 20, and most openers pass without touching a hotel market. Then there’s the one at Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks raise their first championship banner in more than 50 years against the 76ers on opening night. Banner nights, farewell tours, a superstar’s return: when an opener carries a headline, it prices like a headline.
Outdoor games. These leave the arithmetic of this article entirely, because they move hockey into football-sized stadiums and land on holiday calendars. The 2027 Winter Classic puts the Mammoth and Avalanche in a 50,000-seat stadium in Salt Lake City on New Year’s Eve, on top of peak ski week; we’ve covered why that market won’t wait. The 2027 Stadium Series follows on February 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Stars hosting the Golden Knights in a building that holds 80,000. Treat both as marquee events, not hockey games.
All-Star weekends. Phoenix hosts NBA All-Star 2027 from February 19 to 21 at Mortgage Matchup Center, the city’s fourth time hosting. An All-Star weekend is three days of league-wide demand aimed at one downtown, which is exactly the compression a regular game can’t produce. Stay downtown within walking distance of the arena, or use the Valley Metro light rail from Sky Harbor if downtown prices out. Either way, book it refundable now. That weekend is also the Stadium Series weekend, if your February travel budget was feeling ambitious.
Playoffs. This is the season the whole warning industry is actually about, and the compression is real: fewer dates, higher stakes, traveling fans, and brutal notice. The NHL announced its 2026 first-round dates on April 16 for a first round starting April 18. If you wait for the schedule, you’re shopping a repriced market with 48 hours to puck drop. The answer is the refundable rate playbook: book flexible rooms across the plausible dates on the clinch, cancel the ones that evaporate, and mind the cancellation cutoffs while you hold them.
The shared-building bonus
One more thing the two league hubs reveal when you lay them side by side. Eleven buildings host both an NBA and an NHL team: Madison Square Garden, TD Garden, United Center, Ball Arena, American Airlines Center, Little Caesars Arena, Crypto.com Arena, Xfinity Mobile Arena, Scotiabank Arena, Delta Center, and Capital One Arena.
A shared building runs 83 home dates across the two leagues plus a concert calendar, which means the schedules regularly stack a basketball night and a hockey night into the same weekend. When they do, one room covers two games. That’s the strongest version of the arena trip: the hotel market still isn’t compressed, your per-game lodging cost just halved, and the building is a five-minute commute both nights. Check both teams’ home slates against the same weekend before you pick dates. This is also where a vacation rental starts to earn its keep. A crew of four doing a two-game weekend in Denver or Dallas splits a downtown rental well, and multi-night stays are where rental math beats hotel math anyway. For a solo one-nighter, a refundable hotel room in an uncompressed market is hard to argue with, and on these nights the market is almost always uncompressed.
The move
Regular-season arena night in a big market: book whenever, downtown if the night-game transit math supports it, and spend two minutes on the convention calendar. Thin-district markets like Ottawa, Raleigh, and Elmont: book early for the geography. Openers with a headline, outdoor games, All-Star Phoenix, and anything with the word playoff attached: refundable, the day the date is real.
