Thanksgiving Week 2026 Games: Where Hotels Actually Get Tight

Thanksgiving week 2026 games laid over the parades, city by city: Chiefs-Bills, Eagles-Cowboys, The Game, Iron Bowl, and which hotel nights compress.

The short answer

Thanksgiving week 2026 runs five NFL games in three days, then rivalry Saturday, with NHL and NBA Cup games underneath. Nationally the holiday is soft for hotels. The nights that compress are local: Buffalo Wednesday through Friday, Arlington’s stadium district Wednesday and Thursday, College Station and Oxford on Thanksgiving night, Columbus and Tuscaloosa Friday and Saturday. Book those refundable now.

The board, Wednesday to Sunday

Every game, time and network below was checked against league, team and organizer pages on September 29, 2026. Times are Eastern. Only games in the cities covered here are listed.

A soft holiday with a few hard nights

The number most fans get backwards comes from STR, the firm that benchmarks hotel performance. Its weekly report on Thanksgiving 2025, published December 8, put U.S. occupancy at 54.9% on Thanksgiving Day and 57.9% for the weekend. That weekend ranked 16th of the past 26 Thanksgiving weekends. The full week sold 19.8 million room nights, the third-highest Thanksgiving week in 26 years, and more than four rooms in ten still sat empty over the weekend.

The reason is where people sleep. AAA projected 81.8 million Thanksgiving travelers in 2025 and at least 73 million of them, nearly 90%, going by car. Most of those trips end at a relative’s house. Business travel is gone for the week.

So the national market is idle, and that is why a single game can move a single city. Revenue managers, the people who set hotel prices, watch pickup pace, meaning how fast bookings land for one specific night. When a Wednesday in Buffalo starts filling in September because of a Thursday game, that night typically gets fenced: a minimum length of stay goes on, discount rates close out (a stop-sell), and the cheapest room types go first. A night when every hotel in a market fills at once is a compression night. The nights around it stay soft. How hotels price a sold-out weekend has the full machinery, and Labor Day weekend ran the same experiment in Green Bay and Atlanta.

The calls below come from the schedule and the size of each hotel market. No rates are quoted. A price checked in September is wrong by October.

Buffalo: three nights in a small market

Wednesday at 7 p.m. the Sabres host the Rangers at KeyBank Center downtown. Thursday at 9 a.m. the 131st YMCA Turkey Trot goes off, starting and finishing at the Buffalo Convention Center this year on a new single-loop 8K course. The Y says it draws more than 14,000. Thursday at 8:20 p.m. the Bills host the Chiefs on NBC. Friday at 8 p.m. the Sabres host the Penguins in the late half of TNT’s Thanksgiving Showdown doubleheader.

The Bills have played 11 Thanksgiving games, going 6-4-1, and every one was on the road. This is the first at home, in the first season of the new Highmark Stadium, against a team that has ended Buffalo’s season in the playoffs four times since the 2020 season.

Orchard Park has almost no hotels of its own, so downtown and the Cheektowaga airport corridor carry all three nights. The Highmark guide has that map, and what the first game in the building did to tickets and logistics is on the record at the stadium debut page. The holiday adds four things.

The tailgate clock runs through dinner. The Bills’ game-day policy closes Abbott Road six hours before kickoff, opens the lots four hours before and opens security gates three hours before. For an 8:20 kickoff that is 2:20, 4:20 and 5:20 p.m. Plan any sit-down Thanksgiving meal around a road that closes mid-afternoon.

The bus has a date quirk. NFTA’s Game Day Express is $5 each way, exact cash or the Token Transit app. When we checked NFTA’s page on September 29 it listed the Chiefs game under November 27. The game is Thursday the 26th.

Thursday is the easy day to fly. The Points Guy, going through TSA numbers after the 2025 holiday, had Thanksgiving Day as the quietest airport day of the year to that point. Chiefs fans who can find a Thursday morning flight skip Wednesday’s hotel night. Go home Saturday, or hold Sunday night and leave Monday.

Weather is a booking variable. In November 2014 a lake-effect storm dropped nearly seven feet in places south of the city, and the NFL moved Bills-Jets to Ford Field on the Monday of Thanksgiving week. In November 2022 the Browns game moved to Detroit for the same reason, and the Bills played the Lions there four days later on Thanksgiving. Book refundable and hold the night after the game, per the refundable playbook.

Rentals earn a look here, with one warning specific to Buffalo. A house in South Buffalo, Blasdell or Hamburg beats three compressed hotel rooms for a Chiefs crew of six, and a Wednesday-to-Friday stay spreads the cleaning fee over three nights. But rental cancellation terms are stricter than a refundable hotel rate, and this is the one market on the board where the game itself has been moved twice in twelve years. Hold the refundable hotel room first. Shop houses second.

Saturday is the release valve. Neither the Bills nor the Sabres are home.

Arlington: the stadium district, two nights

Eagles at Cowboys kicks at 4:30 Eastern, 3:30 local, at AT&T Stadium. The Stars are home Wednesday and Saturday at American Airlines Center in Dallas. The Mavericks are away until November 30.

Arlington is the largest city in the country without a mass transit system. No rail, no scheduled buses, only an on-demand van service. The one walkable hotel pocket is the Entertainment District around Texas Live!, which holds two Loews properties and a handful of chains. It is the only address where a holiday kickoff doesn’t end in a rideshare queue. Expect it to be fenced for Wednesday and Thursday. Dallas and Fort Worth sit on either end of I-30 with far more rooms, and neither will notice the holiday.

For four or more people, a house in Arlington or Grand Prairie gives you a driveway for a Thanksgiving tailgate and usually beats district rates per head.

Detroit: Wednesday is the night

Wednesday night the Red Wings host the Canucks at Little Caesars Arena. Thursday the 100th America’s Thanksgiving Parade steps off at Kirby and Woodward at 8:45 a.m. and runs three miles south to Congress, about four hours before the Bears and Lions kick at Ford Field. The Pistons are home Friday and the Red Wings again Saturday.

The parade and the game share one downtown. Ford Field is on Brush Street, on the far side of Comerica Park from Woodward. In 2025 the city closed Woodward from West Grand Boulevard to Larned from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving, and a second set of downtown streets for the Turkey Trot stayed shut from 5 a.m. until about 10. The People Mover ran 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and city buses ran a Sunday schedule. Woodward started closing the day before, West Grand Boulevard to Warren at 9 a.m. Wednesday and Warren to Congress at noon. The Parade Company’s visitor page, checked September 29, carries the same closure pattern under this year’s dates, with its parking section still marked as 2025 information, so confirm the hours Thanksgiving week. Either drive in from the east side of downtown and park before the closures, so you never cross the route, or sleep downtown Wednesday and walk.

Which is why Wednesday is the compression night. Parade families, Bears fans who drove over from Chicago, and a Red Wings crowd all want the same downtown rooms. Thursday night runs the other way. A 1 p.m. kickoff is over a little after 4 and most of the visiting crowd drives home. Friday and Saturday are arena nights, and arena nights rarely move a big-city market.

Black Friday college towns: College Station and Oxford

Two small markets play on Friday, which makes Thanksgiving night the hotel night in both.

Texas at Texas A&M kicks at 6:30 p.m. Central on ABC at Kyle Field. The on-campus Texas A&M Hotel publishes a two-night minimum for every 2026 football weekend, this one included, with a 30-day cancellation deadline. After that the full stay is charged and nothing comes back for a no-show or an early checkout. For a Thanksgiving-week arrival that deadline lands in late October. What six college towns publish has the rest.

The Egg Bowl is at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford at 11 a.m. Central on ABC, the second straight year in that Black Friday slot. A morning kickoff makes Thursday the night you need, in a town with very few rooms. What Oxford’s hotels did for the LSU game is the best preview of it.

Columbus: Friday got added

Michigan at Ohio State is Saturday at noon on FOX at Ohio Stadium. The booking calendar covers why the Short North goes first. What’s new is the Blue Jackets’ schedule the day before.

On Friday at 3 p.m. the Red Wings play at Nationwide Arena. Nationwide anchors the Arena District, which runs straight into the Short North, the strip every Michigan and Ohio State traveler wants for a noon kickoff. So a hockey crowd is in those blocks on Friday afternoon, and the football crowd checks into the same blocks on Friday night.

The I-270 outerbelt, from Dublin and Polaris in the north around to the Hilliard and Galloway side out west, holds the chain hotels and typically holds them longest. From the west side the stadium is a drive of ten-plus miles. The Short North and the Arena District are the blocks that compress, Friday as much as Saturday.

For a crew of four or more, price a house in the University District, Victorian Village or Italian Village, the neighborhoods around campus and the Short North. The trade is a cleaning fee and a cancellation window that closes well before a refundable hotel rate does, so lock the rental only when the trip is certain.

Tuscaloosa: the kickoff is the open item

The Iron Bowl is at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, November 28. As of October 28 the time is still not set. Auburn’s official schedule lists it as “Flex,” which in the SEC’s 2026 windows means either 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Central or 5 to 7 p.m. Central, with the exact time confirmed no later than six days out.

Book Friday and Saturday regardless. Tuscaloosa hotels typically attach two-night minimums to Alabama home weekends, so the bill is two nights whichever window the game lands in. If nothing is left in town, Birmingham is about 58 miles up I-20/59, roughly an hour with no traffic.

A house often wins here. The minimum forces two nights anyway, which is where rental math works. Rental cancellation terms usually stop refunding weeks out, so hold a refundable Birmingham room as insurance until the house is locked.

New York: the parade sets the price

Two Knicks NBA Cup games at Madison Square Garden, the Cavaliers on Wednesday and the Heat on Friday, do nothing to a market the size of Manhattan. The 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade does.

It starts at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at West 77th Street and runs down Central Park West, across Central Park South and down Sixth Avenue to Herald Square, with what Macy’s calls a record 100 inflatables. Balloon inflation is Wednesday near the American Museum of Natural History, and Macy’s parade page is the place to check public hours. Hotels along the route typically price Wednesday and Thursday for the parade, often with minimum stays. Basketball fans should sleep off it, in Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn or Long Island City, and take the subway in.

The clears, and one mild case

Los Angeles. Packers at Rams on Wednesday, Patriots at Chargers in the same building Sunday night. Hotels right at SoFi are thin, but the LAX corridor absorbs both games. The cost of this trip is the airport. Fly Tuesday, or stay through Monday.

Pittsburgh. Broncos at Steelers is the Steelers’ first Friday game since September 20, 1946, and a 3 p.m. kickoff makes Thanksgiving night the arrival night. The North Shore’s walkable hotel pocket is small and goes first, which the Acrisure guide covers. Downtown handles the rest.

Kansas City. Arrowhead is dark from the Cardinals game on November 22 until the Patriots on Monday, December 21. Chiefs fans, your trip is the Buffalo section.

Chicago. Rangers at Blackhawks on Friday, the Bears in Detroit, a normal Friday and Saturday. Then RSNA opens at McCormick Place on Sunday the 29th, the day the Wild visit the United Center. That one is in the convention piece.

Tight means expect minimum stays and closed-out discounts. Firm means the closest rooms go first and the rest of the market holds. Normal is an ordinary night, and soft is holiday-quiet.

Book the tight nights refundable now. In Buffalo, hold Saturday too in case of snow, and ask the four shuttle questions before trusting any hotel’s game-day van. College Station has a clock on it, since the campus hotel’s refund window closes 30 days before arrival. Everything marked normal or soft can wait for November.

Two dates are still open. The NFL can move the Sunday night game with 12 days’ notice, which for Week 12 means by November 17. The SEC confirms the Iron Bowl kickoff no later than November 22.

FAQ

What NFL games are on Thanksgiving Day 2026?

Three, on Thursday, November 26: Bears at Lions at 1 p.m. ET on CBS, Eagles at Cowboys at 4:30 p.m. ET on FOX, and Chiefs at Bills at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC. The Buffalo game is the first Thanksgiving home game in Bills history. The week also has a Wednesday night game (Packers at Rams, 8 p.m. ET on Netflix) and a Black Friday game (Broncos at Steelers, 3 p.m. ET on Prime Video).

Is there an NFL game the night before Thanksgiving 2026?

Yes, for the first time. The Packers visit the Rams at SoFi Stadium on Wednesday, November 25 at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. Pacific), streamed on Netflix. Los Angeles has enough hotel rooms to absorb it. The harder part of that trip is flying into LAX on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and home on the Sunday after, which in 2025 was the busiest day in TSA history.

Which city is hardest to book for Thanksgiving week 2026?

Buffalo. The Sabres host the Rangers Wednesday night, more than 14,000 runners start the Turkey Trot downtown at 9 a.m. Thursday, the Bills host the Chiefs at 8:20 that night, and the Sabres host the Penguins Friday night on TNT. That is three straight nights of visitors in a small market whose stadium suburb has almost no hotels. Book Wednesday through Friday refundable now.

Does Detroit's Thanksgiving parade affect getting to the Lions game at Ford Field?

Yes. The 100th America's Thanksgiving Parade steps off at Kirby and Woodward at 8:45 a.m. and runs three miles down Woodward to Congress. In 2025 the city closed Woodward from West Grand Boulevard to Larned from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ford Field is on Brush Street, on the far side of Comerica Park from Woodward. For the 1 p.m. kickoff, sleep downtown Wednesday night and walk, or drive in from the east side of downtown so you never cross the route.

Are hotels cheaper on Thanksgiving weekend?

Nationally, hotels are far from full. STR put U.S. occupancy at 54.9% on Thanksgiving Day 2025 and 57.9% for Thanksgiving weekend, which ranked 16th of the past 26. In most cities that typically means ordinary rates and late availability. The exceptions are local and event-driven: a small market with a marquee game (Buffalo, Tuscaloosa, College Station, Oxford), a big rivalry in one neighborhood (Columbus), or a small walkable district beside a huge stadium (Arlington).

When is the 2026 Iron Bowl and where should I stay?

Saturday, November 28 at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. As of October 28 the kickoff time is not set. The SEC gave the game a flex window, meaning either 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Central or 5 to 7 p.m. Central, with the exact time confirmed no later than six days before the game. Tuscaloosa hotels typically attach two-night minimums to Alabama home weekends. Birmingham, about 58 miles up I-20/59, is the fallback when Tuscaloosa is gone.
