Players Championship 2027: Where to Stay Near Sawgrass

Ponte Vedra Beach has barely any hotels, so the call is which of four bases you take for March 9-14, 2027. Real drive times and the March rate math.

The short answer

The 2027 Players Championship runs March 9-14 at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, with practice rounds Tuesday and Wednesday and competition Thursday the 11th through Sunday the 14th. Ponte Vedra Beach has a handful of hotels and nothing resembling a hotel district, so the real decision is which of four bases you take. Book refundable.

The problem nobody writes down

Search “Players Championship hotels” and you get the same list everyone gets: Sawgrass Marriott, then a wall of properties in Jacksonville with no explanation of what the drive actually costs you on a Saturday morning.

Here is what the list hides. Ponte Vedra Beach is a wealthy, low-density beach community in St. Johns County with two historic resorts, a golf-resort complex, a select-service Hilton and essentially nothing else. Drive A1A and you pass gated neighborhoods, not hotel signage. So every fan at this tournament is choosing a ring, the same way fans at Medinah and Adare Manor had to. The difference is that this venue has the Atlantic on one side and the whole city of Jacksonville on the other, and the rings behave nothing alike.

Four bases, plus an overflow ring. Drive data checked October 9, 2026 against Rome2Rio route estimates:

BaseTo the courseWhat it buysTake it if
Sawgrass / TPC BoulevardUnder a mileGates in minutes, no parking mathYou want practice-round mornings and a nap between nines
Ponte Vedra oceanfront~4 miles, 8 minAtlantic, old-Florida resort weekYou’re bringing a non-golfer
Jacksonville Beach~7 miles, 13 minRestaurants, bars, chain-brand pointsYou want a town after the round
Downtown Jacksonville~23 miles, 32 min20,000-room market, official shuttle in 2026Rate matters more than drive time
St. Augustine~24 miles, 35 minOverflow with something to doEverything north is gone

Jacksonville International is the awkward one: roughly 35 miles and 42 minutes, on the far side of the city from the course. If you land at JAX and your hotel is at the beach, you are driving through or around Jacksonville twice. Rent the car. The bus version of that trip is three hours and nineteen minutes with two transfers, which tells you everything about transit here.

What March already costs you before the golf

This is the piece that changes how you book, so sit with it.

At most marquee events the tournament creates the compression. Revenue managers, the people who set hotel rates against a defined comp set of rival properties, watch pickup pace on the event nights, close out discounted plans, attach minimum-length-of-stay rules and raise the rate ceiling. Normal week underneath, spike on top. We made that argument about Phoenix in the February 2027 collision piece, where All-Star lands on a market already at its annual peak.

Northeast Florida in March is the same structure and almost nobody planning a golf trip accounts for it. March is the single highest-earning month of the year for short-term rentals in both Ponte Vedra Beach and St. Augustine, according to AirROI market data covering August 2025 through July 2026 and updated September 12, 2026. Not July. March. Snowbirds are still in residence, the ocean is swimmable by Florida standards, and spring break season runs the whole month. So the golf lands a premium on top of a market that was already at its annual ceiling.

Now the part that cuts the other way, and it’s good news for 2027. The in-state spring break wave lands the week after the golf. Duval County and St. Johns County public schools both scheduled spring break for March 15-19, 2027. Florida State’s university calendar lists March 15-19. The University of Florida’s catalog lists March 13-20, so UF’s break opens on moving day, Saturday the 13th, and runs into the following week. Translated: the tournament’s Thursday and Friday sit in front of the local family surge, and the Sunday afternoon you fly home is when half of Florida arrives.

That is a genuine advantage over a year where the two collide. Use it on the front half of the week. Tuesday and Wednesday practice rounds, in a market that hasn’t hit its own peak yet, are the cheapest good days of this trip by a wide margin.

One more layer, from the PGA Tour’s August 26, 2026 schedule release. The 2027 Florida swing is four consecutive weeks: the Cognizant Classic at PGA National February 22-28, the Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral March 1-7, the Players March 8-14, and the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill March 15-21. Four straight weeks of tour golf in one state, ending in Orlando during local spring break. If you were ever going to build a two-stop Florida golf trip, Doral into Sawgrass is the pairing the calendar allows. The length of the state is the only obstacle.

Base one: next to the course

The Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa is the closest large hotel to the gates, with more than 500 rooms and villas clustered around a lagoon, and the resort describes itself as right next door to TPC Sawgrass. TPC Sawgrass’s own golf-vacations page names it the host hotel. It also runs a complimentary shuttle to its Cabana Beach Club, about seven minutes east, which matters if your group splits between golf and sand.

The property most people miss sits at the course entrance. The Hilton Garden Inn Jacksonville Ponte Vedra Sawgrass, 128 rooms at 45 TPC Boulevard, is the only other hotel in the immediate pocket. A hundred and twenty-eight rooms. That is the entire select-service supply at the gates of the event the tour bills as its premier stop.

In a market that thin, the fencing shows up early. Expect minimum stays across the Thursday-to-Sunday nights, discount plans closed out, and the walk-up rate stepping as the house fills. The useful tell is availability, not price: when the closest two properties show nothing refundable for your dates, you have your answer about which ring you’re in, and you move out one.

The tournament has not published a fan room block. Its Plan Your Visit page, checked October 9, 2026, sends hotel bookings to a third-party partner called Stayker and rental-home bookings to Rent Like A Champion, which is the same broker tour pros use to rent houses near the course. Nothing on that page names a hotel. If someone sells you an “official” package, read what’s actually in the envelope first; our event-package breakdown covers what those bundles typically include and what they mark up.

Base two: Ponte Vedra oceanfront

About 4 miles east of the course, 8 minutes, and a completely different trip. The Ponte Vedra Inn & Club and its sister property The Lodge & Club sit on Ponte Vedra Boulevard with the Atlantic out the window.

Check the construction before you book this one. The Jacksonville Daily Record reported in March 2025 that St. Johns County had issued a $44 million permit for the Inn & Club’s new Surf Club, the resort’s rebuilt oceanfront gateway, with completion estimated for early 2027. As of October 9, 2026 the operator’s site was still publishing renovation progress updates. March 2027 sits right on the edge of that estimate, so a traveler booking now cannot know which pools, restaurants and ballroom spaces will be open. Call and ask what’s finished, specifically, for your dates. The Lodge & Club has its own project in the pipeline: the St. Johns Citizen reported on March 11, 2026 that the club had applied for a roof, stucco and entryway overhaul, with no construction dates set and the county hearing still unscheduled.

Worth stating plainly because it’s the kind of thing that ruins a trip: an oceanfront resort mid-renovation at peak rate is a bad buy, and the only way to find out is to ask a human.

Base three: Jacksonville Beach

About 7 miles and 13 minutes to the course, and the ring I’d take if I were booking for a group of adults who want a town.

Jax Beach has the brand depth the Ponte Vedra pocket doesn’t: the Margaritaville Beach Hotel, a Courtyard, a SpringHill Suites and a Hampton Inn all on the oceanfront, plus One Ocean Resort & Spa a few minutes north in Atlantic Beach. Restaurants and bars are walkable from most of it, which solves the real evening problem at this tournament. Ponte Vedra closes early and politely.

The drive is A1A south, and it’s pleasant until it isn’t. Thursday and Friday mornings load up with local traffic heading the same way; the published course route is I-95 exit 32 east on County Road 210, which is for people coming from farther out. From Jax Beach you’re just on the beach road, so leave earlier than the 13 minutes suggests and accept that you’ll be sitting somewhere near the Nocatee turn.

Base four: downtown Jacksonville

Twenty-three miles and 32 minutes, and the only base with a transportation plan attached.

Action News Jax reported on March 6, 2026 that the tournament ran a paid downtown Jacksonville shuttle Thursday through Sunday, picking up at the Marriott Jacksonville Downtown, the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront and the Southbank Hotel Jacksonville Riverwalk, with departures around 7 a.m., 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Passes were sold separately and in advance for a specific departure. The same report listed free shuttles Friday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with free parking at Palm Valley Academy, Valley Ridge Academy and Pine Island Academy in the Nocatee area, dropping at the Nicklaus entrance.

None of that is confirmed for 2027. The tournament’s parking page was live as of October 9, 2026 but carried no lot or shuttle detail for March 2027, and its ticket FAQ said parking pricing was not yet available. Treat the 2026 setup as the likely pattern and verify it the week the plan posts.

Why downtown works at all is scale. HVS put Duval County at roughly 20,000 guestrooms in a July 2024 market report, with about 1,800 added between January 2021 and June 2024 and another 2,000 under construction or in early development. A market that size does not sell out for a golf tournament, which is exactly why the countywide numbers look so unremarkable during Players week. Angela Lahti’s HVS analysis of the 2024 edition found Duval at 83.0% occupancy and a $158.73 ADR for the week of March 11-17, against 87.9% and $160.28 the same week in 2023, and put the dip down to new supply rather than weaker demand. Eighty-three percent countywide is just a busy week. All the real compression sits 25 miles south in St. Johns County, where the rooms get counted in hundreds, and a countywide average has no way to show you that.

One scheduling note if you come in early: the Gate River Run, a 15K with a 20,000-person capacity, is set for Saturday, March 6, 2027 with a start and finish at Ford on Bay downtown. That’s two days before tournament week opens. A Friday-night arrival downtown puts you in a race hotel.

And if the whole north end is gone, go south. St. Augustine is about 24 miles and 35 minutes from the course, with a hotel and inn market built for tourists rather than golf, and a town worth an afternoon when you’ve had enough par 3s. The catch: March is St. Augustine’s own peak month in that same rental data. Different inventory pool, same season.

When a house beats two hotel rooms

This is one of the markets where a rental genuinely wins, and the tournament’s own travel page agrees with that.

The numbers are small and the shape is useful. AirROI’s Ponte Vedra Beach data, covering August 2025 through July 2026, counts roughly 200 active listings with 97% of them whole homes, 64.5% offering three or more bedrooms, and an average capacity above six guests. So the supply that exists is built for groups, not couples. For a foursome, a three-bedroom near Palm Valley or in Nocatee gets you a kitchen, a garage for clubs, and a cleaning fee that divides by four instead of landing on one card. Nocatee specifically had free tournament shuttles in 2026, which is the best rental-plus-logistics combination in this market.

Two things to read before you send a deposit. St. Johns County regulates rentals east of the Intracoastal under Ordinance 2021-23: registration renewed annually, a cap of 10 transient guests, two per sleeping room, one parking space per three occupants. And many of the neighborhoods you actually want, the gated ones off Ponte Vedra Boulevard, carry HOA covenants that prohibit short-term rentals entirely, regardless of what the county allows. A listing can be illegal under its own HOA and still take your money.

Cancellation is the other half. A rental’s terms are almost always stiffer than a refundable hotel rate, and that asymmetry is the whole reason to hold both for a while. Check Vrbo and Airbnb against each other, because listings here split across both platforms. If your group might shrink, keep the refundable hotel and let the house go; the mechanics of running two holds at once are in the refundable-rate playbook, and the fine print that catches people is in the free-cancellation guide.

Getting in, and the small stuff that costs you a morning

Parking is advance-only and priced by day. In 2026 general parking ran $20 a day Tuesday and Wednesday and $50 a day Thursday through Sunday plus tax and fees, per Visit Jacksonville, with a separate digital pass required for each day and nothing sold on site. General lots are labeled C, D, E and G. The 2027 prices were not posted as of October 9, 2026. Bikes and golf carts park free near Gate B off PGA Tour Boulevard, which locals use and visitors never think about.

Rideshare has one door. Drop-off and pickup is the Couples entry off ATP Boulevard, steps from the 15th hole. Uber is the official rideshare partner, and the destination to enter is the tournament name rather than the course address.

Bags are small. Opaque bags up to 6x6x6 inches, clear bags up to 12x6x12. Food comes in a one-gallon clear plastic bag with items in clear wrap. Empty reusable cups up to 32 ounces get in. No memorabilia at all, so leave the pin flags, photos, trading cards and balls in the car. Gates opened at 7:30 a.m. in 2026 and the first groups go off early, so the honest Saturday schedule involves an alarm you won’t enjoy.

Tickets. The Stadium Pass is general admission, sales were open as of October 9, 2026, and the account limit is four tickets per day. Up to two kids 15 and under get in free with a ticketed adult all week, courtesy of Nemours Children’s Health, though children six and over need their own ticket for hospitality venues. Tuesday, March 9 is Military Appreciation Day with a concert.

The course itself rewards the walk. The Players Stadium Course opened in 1980 as Pete and Alice Dye’s purpose-built spectator experiment, with grass mounding instead of grandstands, and the 137-yard island-green 17th is the single best cheap seat in American golf because the mounds around it hold a crowd that can see the whole shot. Get there early on a practice day when you can actually move.

The booking play

Pick your ring before you shop, because shopping first is how people end up with a $400 room 40 minutes from a course they could have been walking to.

If you want the golf and nothing else, the Sawgrass pocket, and you look there first because 128 select-service rooms plus one resort is the entire inventory. If someone in the party isn’t going to the tournament, Ponte Vedra oceanfront, with a phone call about renovation status. If you want dinner options, Jacksonville Beach. If the rate is the binding constraint, downtown, and you buy a shuttle pass the day the 2027 plan posts.

Hold it refundable either way. Five months out is the easy part of this market: retail inventory is still open, minimums haven’t fully hardened around the Thursday-to-Sunday nights, and cancelling costs nothing. What you’re buying is optionality on a market that peaks in March whether or not a golf tournament shows up. For the broader version of that argument, how hotels price a sold-out weekend covers the mechanics, and if you’re building a Florida golf spring, the Masters guide handles the April problem and the Tour Championship guide handles August in Atlanta.

Practice rounds are Tuesday and Wednesday, March 9 and 10, competition Thursday through Sunday, March 11 to 14. The 2027 parking and shuttle plan wasn’t posted when this went up, so that part is a second trip to the tournament site in January or February.

FAQ

When is the 2027 Players Championship?

Tuesday, March 9 through Sunday, March 14, 2027, at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Tuesday and Wednesday are professional practice rounds, with Military Appreciation Day and a concert on the Tuesday. Competition runs Thursday, March 11 through Sunday, March 14. The PGA Tour's August 26, 2026 schedule release lists the tournament week as March 8-14.

Where should you stay for the Players Championship?

Four bases, in order of convenience. Next to the course in the Sawgrass/TPC Boulevard pocket, where the Sawgrass Marriott and a 128-room Hilton Garden Inn sit within a mile of the gates. Ponte Vedra oceanfront, about 4 miles and 8 minutes east. Jacksonville Beach, roughly 7 miles and 13 minutes north, with the deepest beach-town restaurant supply. Or downtown Jacksonville, 23 miles out, which in 2026 had an official tournament shuttle.

How far is TPC Sawgrass from Jacksonville?

About 23 miles and a 32-minute drive from downtown Jacksonville, per Rome2Rio route data checked October 9, 2026. Jacksonville International Airport is farther: roughly 35 miles and 42 minutes, on the opposite side of the city. Jacksonville Beach is the close one at about 7 miles and 13 minutes. Public transit is not a real option; the bus trip from the airport runs over three hours with two transfers.

Can you stay at the Sawgrass Marriott during the Players Championship?

It takes bookings during tournament week, and TPC Sawgrass names the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa as its host hotel on its own golf-vacations page. It is the single closest large hotel to the gates, which means it is also the first property in the market to fill. The tournament publishes no fan room block; its Plan Your Visit page routes hotel bookings to a third-party partner, Stayker, and rentals to Rent Like A Champion.

Are hotels expensive during the Players Championship?

In Ponte Vedra Beach and at the Beaches, yes. County-wide the number is calmer than fans expect: HVS reported Duval County at 83.0% occupancy and a $158.73 average daily rate for the week of March 11-17, 2024, down from 87.9% and $160.28 the same week in 2023. Duval has roughly 20,000 guestrooms to absorb the week. St. Johns County, where the course sits, has a fraction of that, and the squeeze lands there.

Is there a shuttle to TPC Sawgrass from Jacksonville?

There was in 2026. Action News Jax reported on March 6, 2026 that a downtown Jacksonville shuttle ran Thursday through Sunday from the Marriott Jacksonville Downtown, the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront and the Southbank Hotel Jacksonville Riverwalk, with departures around 7 a.m., 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and passes sold in advance for a chosen time. Free shuttles also ran Friday to Sunday from Nocatee-area schools. The 2027 transportation plan was not published as of October 9, 2026.

Can you rent a house near TPC Sawgrass?

Yes, and the tournament itself points you there. Supply is small and skewed large: AirROI counted about 200 active Ponte Vedra Beach listings in data through July 2026, 97% of them whole homes, with 64.5% offering three or more bedrooms. St. Johns County caps vacation rentals east of the Intracoastal at 10 transient guests under Ordinance 2021-23 and requires one parking space per three occupants. Many Ponte Vedra HOAs ban short-term rentals outright.
