Cleveland’s 2026 is over. The Rays finished the ALCS in six

Tampa Bay won Game 6 at Tropicana Field 7-3 on Monday, October 19 and took the series 4-2. Seven hits each, no errors, 30,230 in the building, 2 hours 55 minutes from an 8:08 p.m. first pitch, per MLB’s box score. Richie Palacios doubled in two in the second, Junior Caminero’s two-run homer in the seventh made it 5-1, Cleveland got two back in the eighth, and Yandy Díaz’s two-run homer in the bottom of the inning closed the door, per Yahoo Sports’ game story. Tim Herrin took the loss. The Game 7 on the calendar for Tuesday the 20th was never played. The rest of this page is about what the result does to a room.

If you are holding a Cleveland night for baseball, there is no baseball to hold it for. Progressive Field hosted Games 3, 4 and 5 of the ALCS and that was its October. World Series Games 3, 4 and 5 were at Tropicana Field on October 26, 27 and 28, and the last of them ended the Series, Milwaukee winning 4-1. Release the 26th through the 28th if baseball is the reason you booked them, and do it before the cutoff rather than letting the hotel keep the night.

The arithmetic went the short way. A club needed four wins, Tampa Bay had three going into Monday, and the Rays won at home. The 3-3 branch, with a Game 7 on Tuesday and a Cleveland pennant that would have put the Series’ middle three games in this building, is the one this page spent a week pricing as a long shot. It was.

What is left for this building is the 2027 regular season. The conditional hold this page recommended for October 26 through 28 is dead. It cost nothing, which was the point, and it is worth nothing now.

How the round went here, since the sequence explains the rest of the page. Cleveland won Game 1 at Tropicana Field 7-3 on Monday, October 12, coming from 2-0 down on Patrick Bailey’s seventh-inning homer and five runs across the eighth and ninth, per ESPN’s play-by-play. The Rays took Game 2 3-1 the next night on three unearned runs after a José Ramírez error at third. Game 3 came home and Cleveland won it 3-2 in a 1 p.m. start on Thursday the 15th, pulled forward from 6 p.m. the day before on a forecast, on Petey Halpin’s go-ahead two-run homer and nine strikeouts from Gavin Williams. Then Friday’s Game 4 never started. Rain took it before a pitch, the first ALCS postponement since 2019, and MLB renumbered the round rather than sliding every date back. Game 4 went Saturday at 8 p.m. and Tampa Bay won 7-3. Game 5 went Sunday at 5 p.m. and Tampa Bay won again. Game 6 went Monday at 8 p.m. in St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay won a third straight.

The renumbering cost Cleveland something the standings do not show: the off day between the Progressive Field games and the flight to Florida. Game 5 ended Sunday evening in Ohio and Game 6 started Monday night in Florida, so both clubs travelled on the morning of the game that ended the series.

Who travels now, and what it costs

Cleveland finished 85-77 and won a third straight AL Central title, clinching on September 26 with a win over Kansas City. As the second-best division winner in the league they drew the bye, and the run that got them here is the reason this market saw October baseball at all: 0-2 down to the White Sox, then three straight, including a 2-0 Game 5 shutout at home on October 10 where the staff struck out 21, the most anyone has thrown in a winner-take-all postseason game per ESPN and CBS Sports.

The Guardians fan’s last trip of the year was a flight to Florida on a day’s notice. It is roughly 1,100 road miles from Cleveland to St. Petersburg and there is no train worth taking, so the window between the final out Sunday evening and first pitch Monday night was about 24 hours, and anyone who made it bought one night for a game that got played and, if they bought a second, a Tuesday for a game that did not. The lesson for a 2027 road trip is the one this page kept repeating: a 24-hour window on a Tuesday check-in closes Monday afternoon, hours before the Monday game even starts, so the conditional night takes day-of-arrival terms or nothing. The Tropicana Field guide has the St. Petersburg logistics, including the free shuttle that does the walk from downtown.

The visiting-fanbase read for this building, for whenever it next matters: Chicago’s support drove 344 miles down I-90 in the Division Series and bought rooms the night before, which is the hardest pattern for a modest downtown hotel bench to price. Tampa Bay’s could not do that and the ALCS games here ran mostly on local demand. A World Series against Milwaukee would have put the drive-in shape back, because Brewers fans can make that trip on I-90 in a day, and drive-in crowds book later, book shorter and go two to a room. File it for the next time a Central rival comes through in October.

Where to stay

Progressive Field is at 2401 Ontario Street, inside downtown, sharing the Gateway complex with Rocket Arena. This is one of maybe four parks in October baseball where “hotel near the stadium” means an actual walk instead of a freeway exit. The October walkability rankings put Cleveland second of eight.

Gateway District: the five-minute walk

The tight ring around the gates. Hilton Garden Inn Cleveland Downtown, 1100 Carnegie Avenue, is the closest hotel to the ballpark at roughly 0.2 miles, and reviewers clock the walk at three to five minutes. Hotel Indigo Cleveland Downtown, 651 Huron Road E, is a block off the gates and sits between the ballpark and the arena.

These two are the whole argument whenever this market gets a date with something else on it. Game 5 was the demonstration: a 1 p.m. Browns kickoff a mile north and a 5 p.m. first pitch meant one crowd left downtown while another arrived, and the people in these two hotels walked past all of it. A World Series date here would have been the same problem with a basketball crowd instead of a football one, and that is the 2027 version of this page already written.

East 4th Street and Euclid Avenue

The restaurant row. Residence Inn Cleveland Downtown at 527 Prospect Avenue E and Holiday Inn Express Cleveland Downtown at 629 Euclid Avenue bracket the East 4th blocks, both a few minutes from the gates on foot. The Kimpton Schofield at 2000 E 9th Street is the better-looking room and still only about 0.3 miles from the gates, call it five minutes. The Hyatt Regency Cleveland at The Arcade at 420 Superior Avenue E is further north, closer to ten.

Here is what the neighborhood’s own marketing skips.

Mabel’s BBQ at 2050 E 4th Street is dark on Mondays, which is the trap on this street, and its hours re-checked October 9 run Tuesday through Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday to 10, Sunday to 8. A World Series Game 3 here would have been a Monday, so the most-recommended pregame spot on East 4th would have been closed for it, which is worth remembering for any Monday postseason date here. It does not take reservations anyway, so it is a line rather than a table you hold. Flannery’s Pub on the corner of East 4th and Prospect, 323 Prospect Avenue E, has been the Guardians pregame staple since it opened in 1997 and keeps normal hours. Barrio, a few doors up, is the other reliable late option.

The practical version for an 8 p.m. first pitch: eat before the game, not after. A night game that starts at 8 finishes near 11, and the Sunday and Monday kitchens on this street are the ones that close first.

Public Square and Tower City

The all-weather play. Rooms around Public Square put you at the top of RTA’s enclosed walkway, which means you can go from a rail platform to the ballpark without stepping outside. The Ritz-Carlton Cleveland is attached to Tower City, about a half-mile from the gates, and the Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Tower is on the square itself. The Westin Cleveland Downtown is roughly 0.6 miles out.

The Ritz-Carlton and the Marriott at Key Tower also turn up on fan-maintained lists of where visiting MLB clubs sleep in Cleveland, along with the Hyatt at the Arcade. Nobody confirms it. The visiting-team piece explains why clubs never will.

The Flats East Bank

About a mile from the gates, 15 to 20 minutes on foot, and the best bar density in the city that is not East 4th. Aloft Cleveland Downtown at 1111 West 10th Street is the hotel in the development. One trap, and it is a hard one now. There is an RTA station called Flats East Bank, and it sits on the Waterfront Line, which as of 2026 runs for Browns home games only. Game 5 on October 18 was the single date all month where baseball landed on a Browns home day, so it was the one date the line was likely running. Per ESPN’s schedule the Browns are then away on October 25, November 1 and November 8 and do not play at home again until November 15, which means the Waterfront Line is dark for the rest of October. If you book the Flats, plan on walking both ways or paying for a car. The walk is fine on the way in and less fine at 11:30 on a cold October night.

Ohio City and Tremont

Hotel supply over here is genuinely thin, a handful of guesthouses and B&Bs, and that is exactly why it is Cleveland’s rental market. The rental section at the bottom has the detail. For the logistics: West 25th–Ohio City is the Red Line’s last stop before Tower City, sitting diagonally across Lorain Avenue from the West Side Market, about a mile out. The walk is better than the ride if the weather holds. Roughly a mile and a half over the Hope Memorial Bridge, under the four pairs of 43-foot sandstone Guardians of Traffic, and the bridge deposits you a block short of the ballpark. That is the walk the franchise is named after, and almost nobody staying downtown bothers to do it.

Playhouse Square and the airport ring

Playhouse Square is about a mile east, with the Crowne Plaza Cleveland at Playhouse Square at 1260 Euclid Avenue, and it is the value step when the Gateway blocks price up. The Hopkins airport cluster is the backstop. The downtown-versus-airport math applies, with one Cleveland-specific wrinkle in your favor: the Red Line is the airport train, under 30 minutes from Hopkins to Tower City per RTA, so an airport room here is actually connected to the ballpark instead of stranded.

Getting to the gate

Rail, and the indoor walkway

Red, Blue and Green Lines all end at Tower City. From there, RTA’s Walkway to Gateway is a 1,050-foot enclosed, climate-controlled skyway running from the Tower City food court to the Rocket Arena lobby, directly across Ontario from the ballpark. It opens three hours before every event and stays open 90 minutes after. For a cold night in Cleveland in late October, that walkway is worth planning your hotel around, and an 8 p.m. postseason first pitch is exactly the night it earns its keep. The last innings of a late-October game here get played near midnight temperatures.

Two more RTA facts worth the fare. Rail service home is guaranteed for 60 minutes after the final out, extra innings included. And you can park free at any RTA rail station and ride in, which beats every downtown garage on price.

A single ride is $2.50 in 2026 and an All-Day Pass is $5, both read off RTA’s own fare page on October 9. The $5 Cleveland Pass is the one RTA publishes as unlimited rides until 3 a.m. the next day, which is the detail that matters on a night game, and it costs the same. Since May 7, 2026, mobile tickets must be scanned at the fare validator when you board; showing a phone screen to the operator no longer counts. Red Line trains run roughly 4 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.

One service note, which is now good news and was the single most-moved fact on this page all month. RTA ran a full October 7–12, 2026 only East Side rail replacement, with #66R buses standing in for Red Line trains between Tower City and East 55th and #67R and #68R replacing the Blue and Green Lines east of Tower City. Then #68R buses replaced Green Line rail between Shaker Square and Green Road from Tuesday, October 13 through Saturday, October 17, per RTA’s service alerts read October 11. Both windows are closed. Every line is on trains now, including the Hopkins-to-Tower-City leg most visitors care about, and RTA restored Airport-to-West Park service back on August 17.

So the rest of October here is clear of rail work, which now matters for the arena rather than the ballpark. Check riderta.com the morning you travel anyway. This project moved three times in two weeks and nothing says it is done moving.

Driving and parking

Two garages are effectively on site. The Great Day Improvements Garage, 650 E Huron Road, is the old Gateway East deck; the Guardians took control of it under a 2024 purchase agreement with the city and sold the naming rights ahead of the 2026 season. It opens three hours before game time and parking passes are mobile-only through the MLB Ballpark app. The JACK Casino North and South garages at 2047 and 2151 Ontario Street are the other close decks.

Postseason inventory in the official garage moves largely as a ticket add-on, so if you did not buy a space with your seat, assume the deck is committed and park a few blocks out instead. The Prospect Avenue and East 9th Street garages add five minutes of walking on the way in and usually save more than that on the way out, because the decks nearest the gates all empty into the same two streets.

Rideshare

The Guardians’ Lyft page lists a dedicated signed pickup and drop-off area on Erie Court; the Ontario Street curb lane also works for drop-offs. Postgame, the surge is short-lived but real, and the fix is the same one locals use at every downtown park: walk five or ten minutes out, toward East 4th or up Prospect, and request from there. Drivers can actually reach you, and the multiplier has usually settled by the time you have your bearings.

The exception is a night when two Gateway buildings have events, and Game 5 proved the shape of it: a Browns crowd leaving downtown around 4:10 while a baseball crowd arrived for 5, both calling cars in the same four blocks. Walking out of the surge does not work when the surge runs in both directions. A World Series Game 3 or Game 5 here would have done the same thing with the Cavaliers tipping at 7 and first pitch at 8. On any night like that, be in a deck before the arena fills, or ride rail in early and eat inside.

Game day

Gates opened two hours before first pitch for all three Division Series home games. For the ALCS the club went to two and a half hours, per the Guardians’ festivities announcement as reported by Cleveland 19 on October 13, and that held through the renumbering: an 11 a.m. gate for the 1 p.m. Game 3, 5:30 p.m. for the 8 p.m. Game 4. Both are far earlier than the regular-season policy of 60 minutes on a weeknight. For the next postseason date here, assume the same two-and-a-half-hour pattern against an 8 p.m. start, so a 5:30 p.m. gate, and confirm it in the MLB Ballpark app the morning of the game rather than trusting the arithmetic. Gateway Plaza, the ticketless pregame party on the plaza between the ballpark and the arena, ran 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for the Saturday night game.

Bags are more relaxed here than at most October ballparks: up to 16 x 16 x 8 inches, no clear-bag requirement, clutches under 9 x 5 x 2 inches fine. Backpacks are out in every form, clear ones included, and so are suitcases. There is no bag check anywhere on the property.

Tickets: the Guardians announced Games 1 and 2 of the Division Series sold out, then released a limited batch of standing-room for Game 1 once it was gone. Two kinds, which is the part nobody explains. A regular standing-room ticket, and a food-and-beverage standing-room ticket that includes food and non-alcoholic drinks in the Paul Davis Pennant District from the moment gates open until an hour after the scheduled first pitch. If the club repeats that for a 2027 postseason game, it is the first place to look, and against a two-and-a-half-hour gate it is a better deal than it sounds. Postseason tickets are digital only through the club’s own postseason page, six per game per buyer. Otherwise it is resale.

There is no roof, and this round showed both ways that bites. Rain wiped out an entire date on October 16. Game 5 on the 18th drew the series’ best weather and still finished after dark, because the temperature at 8 is not the temperature at 5. For a late-October night game here, dress for the last inning rather than the first, and read the National Weather Service gridpoint forecast for downtown Cleveland the day before rather than a phone-app summary; the gridpoint is where the overnight low lives.

What else wants your room on those nights

This is the part no booking site tells you, and in Cleveland the answer genuinely varies by date. The arena, football and convention calendars below were re-checked on October 18, 2026.

Rocket Arena was clear for the whole ALCS, and the World Series nightmare never arrived. The Cavaliers do not open until October 22, on the road in Philadelphia, so nothing in the building next door competed with any baseball date in this round. Unusual for a shared-complex downtown in late October.

Series week would have been the other half. Had Cleveland won the pennant, this park would have had World Series Games 3 and 4 on October 26 and 27 plus Game 5 on the 28th if needed, and per ESPN’s team schedule the Cavaliers are home on two of those three nights: Minnesota on Monday, October 26 at 7 p.m. and Washington on Wednesday, October 28 at 7 p.m., with the home opener against Brooklyn on Saturday the 24th at 7:30. Rocket Arena and Progressive Field share a plaza. Two buildings, one set of garages, one set of bars, one set of hotel blocks, on the same night, with the baseball pitching an hour after the basketball tipped. That is the shape to remember for the next time Cleveland is alive in late October. This year the Rays ended it on the 19th, so the Cavs’ nights are ordinary arena nights and the baseball is in Florida.

What to do with that now: nothing, for baseball. Cancel the October 26 through 28 hold. If you are coming for the Cavaliers, the Warehouse District and Playhouse Square are both walkable and neither shares a doorway with the arena crowd, and the Gateway blocks price like any arena night.

Football is out of the way, and that part is confirmed. The Browns beat Baltimore 13-10 at home at 1 p.m. on October 18, four hours before Game 5, which was the one collision this market had all month. Per ESPN’s schedule Cleveland is then at Tennessee on the 25th, at Pittsburgh on November 1 and at New Orleans on November 8, with no home date until Houston on November 15. So no NFL crowd competes for a downtown room through the end of October.

Conventions. MAICON, the Marketing AI Institute’s conference, ran October 13 to 15 at the Huntington Convention Center and overlapped Game 3. Mid-sized rather than citywide, and the useful part was the sequence: those attendees checked in Monday and Tuesday, so the cheapest downtown tiers were closed out before a baseball buyer started shopping on Thursday. For October 22 through 31, the convention center’s own calendar returned no listings we could read when we checked on October 18, so treat that window as unconfirmed rather than clear.

Two pieces of misinformation worth killing, because both are still live on trade-show aggregators and both would change how you read this market. One lists Content Marketing World at the Huntington Convention Center for October 5 to 7; that conference moved to the Colorado Convention Center in Denver for 2026. The other lists the Healthcare Design Conference + Expo at the Cleveland center for October 17 to 20, which would have sat right on top of Games 4 and 5. HCD 2026 is in New Orleans, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, per the conference’s own site. Checked October 11 and both listings were still circulating on October 18. Aggregator calendars guess at venues and they guess wrong in both directions, which is exactly why the fall convention collisions piece works off the centers’ own listings.

Booking strategy for this market

Cleveland’s downtown room count is modest and heavily concentrated in the blocks you actually want, which is what makes a playoff date here behave the way it does. Revenue managers, the people who set hotel rates, call a date like this a compression night: demand across the whole submarket runs past supply, so every property is pricing against a comp set that is doing the same thing. When pickup pace runs hot against last year, the cheap tiers get closed out first (a stop-sell), minimum length-of-stay controls go on next, and ADR is the part you actually see move. The order matters to you because the first two happen quietly, before any headline rate changes.

The ALCS handed this market a shape it almost never sees, three consecutive certain nights, and then the weather slid them and the Rays ended them. October 15, 17 and 18, all played, all gone. There is nothing left here to book on a firm date.

The conditional hold on October 26 to 28 is dead. Cancel it. That hold was the right instrument and it worked the way a refundable rate is supposed to: the pennant settled on Monday, October 19, seven days before Game 3 would have been played, comfortably inside any standard cancellation window, so dropping it costs nothing. What would have cost you is a prepaid rate bought on optimism. The Guardians needed two wins at Tropicana Field and got none, and a prepaid night in a city whose team went out is money gone. If you converted early, call the property rather than filing a web form; a downtown hotel that can resell a Monday with a Cavaliers game on it has a reason to let you out.

One mechanic worth knowing for the next time the fences go up here. Book the shortest stay the minimum-length-of-stay rule will sell you, then extend at the desk once you are in the building. An extension on a live reservation gets priced off whatever inventory is left, which is worse than a clean advance rate and better than a cold walk-in, and the front desk has a reason to say yes to a guest who is already upstairs. If the Gateway and East 4th blocks come back thin, the order is Playhouse Square, then the Hopkins ring on the Red Line, then a rental in Ohio City or Tremont. When a rental beats a hotel here

Cleveland is a better rental market than its hotel map suggests, and the reason is geographic. The neighborhoods with the thinnest hotel supply, Ohio City and Tremont, are the ones with the deepest whole-home inventory on Vrbo and Airbnb. Both are a Red Line stop or a bridge walk from the gates.

The last round was the bad version of this question. A one-night Monday is the worst possible shape for a vacation rental, because the cleaning fee does not prorate: on a $200 house a $150 clean is most of the way to a second hotel room, so four people were better off in two downtown hotel rooms five minutes from the gate.

A World Series stay would have been the good version, and it is the one case where a Cleveland rental clearly beats hotel rooms. Three consecutive home dates, which is what October 26 through 28 would have been, is where the cleaning fee stops being a surcharge and starts being a rounding error. Four or more people splitting an Ohio City or Tremont house across those nights beats two or three compressed Gateway rooms on the all-in total, fees included, and you get a kitchen for a week when every East 4th table is a line.

The problem is the condition, and rental terms handle conditions badly. Hosts on Vrbo pick from seven cancellation tiers; only two are loose, Day-before at 24 hours and Lenient at five days, and the other five put the full-refund wall 14 days out or earlier, which a Series-week booking made in October is already past. So the honest ranking for a conditional Cleveland hold is a refundable hotel first, a Vrbo on a Day-before tier second, Airbnb’s Flexible tier third, which also refunds to 24 hours out. Airbnb pays us nothing and we will still say it, because a rental you cannot cancel is the wrong instrument for a night that might not exist, and this October is the proof: the night did not exist. Convert to the house once the date is certain, never before. Vrbo carries the deeper Ohio City and Tremont whole-home supply, so check both.

One group detail that holds whenever you come. The West Side Market sits a block from the Ohio City Red Line station and runs 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, hours off the market’s own site on October 16. For a crew feeding itself before an 8 p.m. game, a market run beats hunting a table downtown.

One timing note. Cleveland City Council passed a new short-term-rental ordinance on June 2, 2026, adding registration, a density cap of 10 percent of any residential block, and license revocation after repeated nuisance complaints. Secondary reporting puts the effective date in late November 2026. That is after this postseason, so the October listings run under the older rules and the inventory you see is the inventory. Worth knowing if you come back for a 2027 series and the Ohio City map looks thinner.
