The 2027 Final Four Double: Columbus, Detroit, One Trip

The 2027 Final Fours alternate cities four straight days, 200 miles apart. One car covers all four sessions. The itinerary, plus why Columbus is the harder room.

Here’s a calendar accident worth a tank of gas. The 2027 Women’s Final Four plays Nationwide Arena in Columbus on Friday, April 2 and Sunday, April 4. The men’s plays Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday, April 3 and Monday, April 5. Four sessions, four straight days, two cities about 200 miles apart. One car covers all of it, and the smaller event is the harder hotel booking.

The interleave

Look at the dates side by side, because the NCAA accidentally built a road trip.

DayGameCity
Friday, April 2Women’s national semifinalsColumbus, Nationwide Arena
Saturday, April 3Men’s national semifinalsDetroit, Ford Field
Sunday, April 4Women’s championshipColumbus
Monday, April 5Men’s championshipDetroit

Neither event knows the other exists. The women’s side is Columbus’s second Final Four, co-hosted by Ohio State and the Greater Columbus Sports Commission. The men’s side is Detroit’s first since 2009. Most years the two championships land a flight apart, San Antonio and Tampa in 2025, Indianapolis and Phoenix in 2026. In 2027 they land three hours apart on US-23 and I-75, on perfectly alternating days. Nobody planned the double. It fell out of the host rotation, and the 2028 hosts, Las Vegas for the men and Indianapolis for the women, snap straight back to flight distance.

We already have a deep Detroit guide covering every neighborhood from Greektown to Windsor, and the women’s event page carries the Columbus basics. This piece covers what the double changes, and it spends most of its time in Columbus, because that’s where the booking problem lives.

Columbus is the tighter market, and it’s not close

Detroit’s event is bigger. Columbus’s is scarcer, on both tickets and beds.

Ford Field is a dome set up for 70,000-plus. Nationwide Arena seats just under 20,000 for basketball. The last time Columbus hosted, in 2018, all three sessions sold out with a then-record 39,123 total fans and 19,559 at the championship game. Demand has only climbed since. The NCAA announced on September 30, 2025 that the 2028 women’s edition moves into Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the first women’s Final Four in a football stadium since 2005, with roughly 31,000 seats to sell. Which makes Columbus the last arena-sized women’s Final Four on the current calendar. A national event at peak popularity, in its smallest building, one more time.

Now the beds. Downtown Columbus has a little over 5,000 hotel rooms, about 2,700 of them connected or adjacent to the Greater Columbus Convention Center, per Experience Columbus. Detroit’s downtown absorbs a 70,000-seat event with help from a whole ring of neighborhoods plus a second country across the river. Columbus is being asked to sleep a sold-out national crowd, four fanbases, media, sponsors, and the coaching-clinic ecosystem that follows this event, in a downtown core a fraction of that size. Revenue managers, the people who set hotel prices, call nights like these compression nights, when the whole market fills and nobody discounts. Expect minimum-stay rules around April 2 through 4 once the bracket gets close. In a market this small they bite early.

One local wrinkle cuts both ways. Ohio State is the co-host, which guarantees corporate and alumni interest whoever plays. If the Buckeye women actually make the field, a chunk of the crowd sleeps in its own beds. If four out-of-state fanbases come in, every one of them needs a room.

Columbus, neighborhood by neighborhood

Arena District. The building sits inside a purpose-built district of bars, restaurants, and a handful of hotels, the AC Hotel among them. This is the walk-out-of-the-game-into-your-lobby inventory, and it is the first to go. If you find a refundable rate here at a normal price, stop reading and book it.

The convention-center spine. The Greater Columbus Convention Center sits a roughly ten-minute walk from the arena along the north edge of downtown, and it’s where the host committee has already announced Tourney Town, the free fan festival. The 1,000-room Hilton Columbus Downtown, Ohio’s largest hotel, connects to it by skybridge; the 633-room Hyatt Regency is attached. That 2,700-room cluster is the volume play, big boxes, walkable, and exactly where the official blocks will concentrate.

Short North. Columbus’s gallery-bar-restaurant strip runs up High Street directly north of the convention center, with a boutique hotel row to match: the Graduate, the Moxy, Le Méridien Columbus, The Joseph. The near end is a few blocks from Tourney Town, and the whole strip is where this weekend will actually happen after the horns. Smaller properties, though. The Moxy has 116 rooms. These sell out rather than price crazy, so early movers win them.

German Village. Brick streets and 19th-century houses a couple of miles south of the arena, and this is the honest answer to the vacation-rental question for Columbus. Hotel supply there is nearly zero, a budget inn and some bed-and-breakfasts, but the Airbnb and Vrbo stock of whole historic houses is real. For a crew of four-plus basing in Columbus all weekend, a German Village house beats two hotel rooms and puts you in the city’s prettiest neighborhood. One warning below on rentals and the zigzag.

Grandview Yard and Easton, the value rings. Grandview Yard, a ten-minute drive northwest, has a compact 250-room cluster (a Hyatt Place and a Courtyard) in a walkable little district of its own. Easton Town Center, ten to fifteen minutes northeast near the airport, has the standard chain stock attached to a giant outdoor mall. Neither is glamorous. Both will be sane when downtown isn’t.

Getting in is simple by big-event standards. John Glenn Columbus International is six miles northeast of downtown, a 10-to-15-minute ride. There’s no rail; budget for the car or the rideshare and know that a downtown base needs neither once you’ve arrived.

The zigzag, night by night

Session times for 2027 aren’t out yet, but the recent pattern is consistent: women’s semifinals Friday evening, men’s semifinals Saturday evening, women’s championship Sunday afternoon (recent finals have aired Sunday afternoon on ABC, and Phoenix’s tipped at 12:30 local), men’s championship Monday night. If that holds, the double works with three unhurried drives.

Thursday, arrive Columbus. Friday, Tourney Town by day, both women’s semifinals at night. Saturday morning, drive north, three-and-a-bit hours, into Detroit by early afternoon for the men’s double-header that evening. Sunday morning, drive back down, leave by 9 a.m. and you’re in Columbus with hours to spare for an afternoon title tip. Sleep in Columbus, because Sunday night there is championship night and the party is walking distance. Monday, drive north one last time for the men’s final. Tuesday, drive home to real life.

That’s four nights: Columbus Friday and Sunday, Detroit Saturday and Monday. Book them as four refundable one-night stays now, per the refundable playbook, and note the cancellation deadline on each one because four bookings means four deadlines. The cutoff guide covers how those windows actually work.

And here’s the rental warning. One-night stays are the worst math in the vacation-rental universe, because cleaning fees are flat and most listings carry two-night minimums and stiff cancellation terms. Rentals are for the crew basing in one city all weekend, the German Village house, the Corktown flat. The zigzag itself is hotel territory. Chain-heavy downtown stocks in both cities also make this a legitimate points weekend if you’re sitting on a balance; the points piece covers when to burn them.

Tickets, and the official-package question, city by city

The men’s side ran a Ticketmaster application for upper-level seats at $400 apiece with a $25 fee, deadline May 31, 2026, and the Detroit Free Press reported applicants would hear by October 31. If you applied, you’re owed an answer by then. If you didn’t, the remaining routes are school allotments once the field is set, and resale. Columbus ran the same shape of application for upper-level all-session seats, $400 a ticket plus a $25 fee, closed May 31 and filled randomly over the summer, per the Columbus Dispatch.

On Location, the NCAA’s official hospitality arm, is where the two cities split. As of October 14, 2026 its Columbus page lists one package, an All-Session Travel Package from $3,095 per person: four nights at the Hilton Columbus Downtown, April 1 to 5, an all-sessions ticket, and fan-experience hospitality. The ticket inside it is the one piece you can no longer buy at face, so it clears the first half of the test in the official-packages piece, what’s inside that you can’t buy separately. Whether $3,095 a head beats a resale ticket plus a refundable rate at the same skybridge hotel is your math to do. Detroit is murkier, and it has moved twice. As of mid-September 2026 the men’s packages were listed as sold out and what remained on the Detroit page was hotel-only: four nights at the Atheneum or the Marriott at the Renaissance Center from $5,000 per person, game tickets not included, which fails the same test about as hard as anything we’ve seen. On October 14 the Detroit list came up empty for us. On October 28 it showed one package again, an all-inclusive at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center with the all-session ticket inside it, so the September read of a ticketless $5,000 room is dead. The page would not print that package’s per-person price for us and we don’t repeat a number we couldn’t read off the page, so open it yourself before doing the math. The one Detroit package that did render in full that day was a tour operator’s, not the NCAA’s: Creative Travel Group sells four nights at Hollywood Casino with 300-level tickets to both semifinals and the final, from $1,935 per person double occupancy on a $350 deposit. There is no official fan hotel block for either city. Rooms come from the open market, which is good news, because the open market still cancels free.

The booking clock, and why these two markets move together

The 2027 men’s regional finals wrap Sunday, March 28, in San Antonio, Los Angeles, Kansas City, and New York. The women’s wrap Monday, March 29, out of Philadelphia and Las Vegas. So Detroit’s four fanbases get six days’ notice and Columbus’s get four. Both windows are absurd, and both reprice their host city within hours of the buzzer, which is the entire case for booking refundable in September at indifference pricing.

The double adds one more reason not to wait. These two markets share a demand pool. Both tournaments now run 76 teams, and the fields will be thick with schools whose fans treat US-23 and I-71 as home roads. A Michigan or an Ohio State or a Notre Dame punching through on either side doesn’t spike one city. It sends the same corridor of drive-in fans shopping both, the same week, and some of them are planning the exact double this article is planning.

Last thing, borrowed from the February 2027 collision piece because the pattern repeats here: the men’s title is a Monday night and Tuesday, April 6 is a workday. Detroit’s Monday crowd skews to the two surviving schools plus locals, Sunday night is when the losing semifinalists’ cancellations flood back into both markets, and the double-tripper needs Tuesday off work requested alongside the rooms. Book the four nights refundable this week and set a reminder for the regional finals, March 25 through 29. That’s when everyone else starts shopping.

FAQ

Can you actually attend both 2027 Final Fours?

Yes, and without a single flight between them. The women's semifinals play Friday, April 2 in Columbus, the men's semifinals Saturday, April 3 in Detroit, the women's championship Sunday, April 4 back in Columbus, and the men's championship Monday, April 5 in Detroit. The cities are about 200 miles apart, a bit over three hours by car, so the alternating schedule leaves a full morning for each drive.

How far is Columbus from Detroit?

Just over 200 miles door to door, about three hours and 20 minutes of driving without stops. The route runs US-23 north out of Columbus to I-75 through Toledo, with Findlay near the halfway mark. It's flat interstate the whole way, but early April in Ohio and Michigan can throw rain or even snow at you, so pad the drive on game days.

Where should I stay for the 2027 men's Final Four in Detroit?

Downtown Detroit or Greektown if you want to walk to Ford Field, Corktown or Midtown for better food and gentler prices a short ride out, and Windsor, Ontario as the border value play if your passport is current. Book refundable now, months before the bracket exists. Our full Detroit guide covers every neighborhood, the People Mover, and the Friday-to-Monday rhythm.

Are there official hotels for the 2027 Women's Final Four?

There is no official fan hotel block you can book on its own. 'Official' for this event means On Location, the NCAA's ticket and hospitality provider, and as of October 14, 2026 its one Columbus listing is an All-Session Travel Package from $3,095 per person: four nights at the Hilton Columbus Downtown, April 1 to 5, plus an all-sessions ticket. That is the only official route that bundles a room. For a room by itself, the answer is the open Columbus market: Arena District and convention-center hotels first, Short North next, refundable rates always.

How much are Final Four hotel rates?

Nobody can honestly quote April 2027 yet, and be suspicious of anyone who tries. Big-event rates only harden once demand shows up; San Antonio hosted the 2025 men's Final Four and downtown still ran 61% occupancy that quarter, per Source Strategies data reported by the San Antonio Business Journal. Columbus is the market where a real squeeze is likeliest, because a sold-out 19,500-seat event is drawing on about 5,000 downtown rooms.

Can you walk to Nationwide Arena from downtown Columbus hotels?

Yes. The arena anchors the Arena District on the northwest edge of downtown, with hotels inside the district itself and the convention-center cluster a roughly ten-minute walk away. Experience Columbus counts about 2,700 rooms connected or adjacent to the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The Short North's boutique hotels are a walkable stretch up High Street from the gates.
