AL Wild Card Series at Daikin Park 2026 hotel guide

Daikin Park · Houston, TX

The White Sox beat the AL West champion Astros 7-3 on Wednesday September 30, 2026 and won the best-of-three AL Wild Card Series at Daikin Park 2-0, so the Game 3 scheduled for October 1 was not played and Houston's season is over. Chicago went to the Division Series against Cleveland, won Games 1 and 2 at Progressive Field on October 3 and 5, then lost three straight: 9-3 at Rate Field on Wednesday October 7, 9-5 there on Thursday October 8, and 2-0 in Game 5 at Progressive Field on Saturday October 10. Cleveland won the series 3-2 and plays Tampa Bay in the ALCS, so Rate Field hosts no more baseball in 2026. The Chicago end of it: Rate Field sits in Armour Square, four miles south of the Loop, with almost no hotel stock within a walk. You book downtown and ride the Red Line to Sox-35th, then cross the Dan Ryan bridge to the gates.

The short answer

Daikin Park hosts no more baseball in 2026. The White Sox swept the Astros 2-0 in the Wild Card Series on September 30, so Houston's season ended there. Chicago then lost the Division Series to Cleveland 3-2, falling 2-0 in Game 5 at Progressive Field on October 10. Cleveland went on to host ALCS Games 3, 4 and 5, then lost the series 4-2 when Tampa Bay won Game 6 7-3 at Tropicana Field on October 19. Milwaukee won the World Series over Tampa Bay in five, closing it at the Trop on October 28.

Daikin Park’s October is over

No more baseball here in 2026. The White Sox swept the Astros out of the Wild Card Series on September 30, Houston was the first club eliminated from this postseason, and the park’s next game is in the 2027 regular season.

That is the honest answer, so it goes first. If you landed here looking for a room for a game at Daikin Park, there isn’t one to book. The year-round Daikin Park guide is the page for a 2027 trip, and the sections lower down here on transit, bags and downtown geography hold for any visit.

Where the series went

Chicago plays Cleveland in the American League Division Series, and Houston is not in it:

  • Game 1: Saturday, October 3, 1:00 p.m. ET, Progressive Field. White Sox won 3-0.
  • Game 2: Monday, October 5, 5:00 p.m. ET, Progressive Field. White Sox won 4-3.
  • Game 3: Wednesday, October 7, 4:00 p.m. ET / 3:00 p.m. CT, Rate Field. Guardians won 9-3.
  • Game 4: Thursday, October 8, 8:00 p.m. ET / 7:00 p.m. CT, Rate Field. Guardians won 9-5. Series tied 2-2.
  • Game 5: Saturday, October 10, 8:00 p.m. ET, Progressive Field. Guardians won 2-0. Cleveland takes the series 3-2.

All on TBS and truTV, streaming on HBO Max, Spanish-language coverage on UniMás.

Chicago’s two home dates were an odd pair. Wednesday was a 3:00 p.m. CT weekday matinee, which meant leaving work early. Thursday was a 7:00 p.m. CT night game, a morning flight in and the Red Line back downtown after 10. Both are spent, and so is the season: Cleveland took the decider at home behind a José Ramírez two-run homer and 21 strikeouts from its pitching staff, the most anyone has thrown in a winner-take-all postseason game, per ESPN and CBS Sports.

Chicago won Game 1 in Cleveland 3-0 on Saturday. Munetaka Murakami hit a two-run homer in the fourth, 440 feet at 112.2 mph off the bat, which Yahoo Sports logged as the hardest-hit ball of this postseason. Colson Montgomery doubled in another run in the seventh. Five White Sox pitchers combined on a three-hitter, per the AP, four of those innings from Grant Taylor for the save.

The conditional is gone. Cleveland took Game 3 at Rate Field 9-3 on Wednesday afternoon, two-out triples from Jo Adell and José Ramírez doing the damage per Yahoo Sports, then won Game 4 9-5 on Thursday night, six runs in the sixth inning off three Chicago relievers. Grant Taylor faced six hitters in that inning and retired none of them, per the Sun-Times. Ramírez homered and drove in three. That tied the series, and the date this page carried as a maybe for a week became a real winner-take-all game: Saturday, October 10, Progressive Field, 8 p.m. ET. Cleveland won it 2-0. Ramírez hit the only runs, a two-run homer in the fourth, Gavin Williams struck out 12 in 5 2/3, and the staff finished with 21 strikeouts, the most anyone has thrown in a winner-take-all postseason game per ESPN and CBS Sports.

The follow-on hotel market was Cleveland, not Chicago, and it is spent: the Guardians hosted ALCS Games 3, 4 and 5 on October 15, 17 and 18 after rain wiped out the 16th, and Tampa Bay won the last two to lead 3-2, then closed it out 7-3 in Game 6 at Tropicana Field on Monday, October 19, per ESPN. The series went 4-2, and the World Series went to the Brewers over the Rays in five: Games 1 and 2 at American Family Field on October 23 and 24, Games 3 to 5 in St. Petersburg on the 26th through the 28th, Milwaukee clinching 4-1 at the Trop on the 28th, and the Games 6 and 7 posted for Milwaukee never played. The Progressive Field guide is a 2027 read now, and so is the Rate Field guide. The October booking map has the cancellation-cutoff mechanics for all four pennant-round host cities.

How Houston’s season ended

White Sox 7, Astros 3 on Wednesday, September 30, after a 6-3 Game 1. Chicago took the best-of-three 2-0 and Daikin Park was done for 2026.

Chicago scored four in the first inning of Game 2 off Hunter Brown, who got two outs. Houston got all the way back to 4-3 on solo homers by Jeremy Peña, Cam Smith and Jose Altuve, and then Chase Meidroth hit a three-run homer in the sixth. Anthony Kay got the win, Brown the loss. Announced attendance was 36,015 with the roof closed, up from 34,011 for Game 1.

AP’s Kristie Rieken wrote that it is Chicago’s first playoff series win since the 2005 World Series, which the White Sox also won against Houston, and that the Astros have now lost nine straight home playoff games across nine postseason trips in the last ten years. The Astros won the AL West on the final day of the regular season and were the first team out of the 2026 bracket.

The Game 3 that was never played

Tickets were sold for an October 1 game the sweep made unnecessary. Keeping the refund rules on record because people are still waiting on the money.

Bought from the Astros: the team’s postseason ticket terms say that when the series ends before a game’s scheduled date, a refund posts automatically to the card used to pay. Ticketmaster’s help page says refunds are issued for playoff games not played because the series ended early.

Bought on resale: the platform’s terms control, and they are not identical. TickPick’s terms say a cancelled event gets a credit or a refund of the full fee paid, at TickPick’s discretion except where a refund is required by law. StubHub’s own explainer says an event that is officially cancelled and not rescheduled is entitled to a refund. Neither page addresses “if necessary” playoff games by name, so read the one you bought from and watch the card.

Where to stay in Houston, for next time

Downtown, convention district, is the default. The park sits on the east edge of downtown just north of the George R. Brown Convention Center, and the hotels around the convention center are roughly five to ten minutes on foot from the gates. Walk to the game, walk back.

EaDo starts on the far side of the I-69 overpass. It is the bar-and-brewery side of an Astros game, with a lot of the bars on St. Emanuel Street, and hotel supply is thin. What it has is townhome rentals, and listings there advertise around a 15-minute walk to the park. That thin-hotel, real-rental mix is exactly the pattern where Vrbo or Airbnb beats a hotel: a group of four or more, two or three nights, one house, a kitchen, and nobody splitting across two floors of a select-service property. For a one-night maybe, flip it, unless the listing happens to carry loose terms. Vrbo hosts choose from seven standard tiers. Relaxed, the middle one, refunds nothing inside seven days; only Day-before holds to 24 hours before check-in, and the tier is on the listing page. The cleaning fee lands whether anyone sleeps there or not. A hotel on day-of-arrival cancel terms is the better tool for a trip that depends on a result.

Midtown and Montrose are the restaurant-and-nightlife choices. Midtown is on the METRORail Red Line; Montrose is a rideshare.

Booking same-day works differently from booking ahead, and the difference is the cancellation clock. A free-cancellation rate is free until a cutoff, commonly 24 or 48 hours before check-in or a set hour on the day of arrival. Book for the same night and most of those cutoffs have already passed, so you are committed when you confirm. Revenue managers, the people who set nightly rates, treat the day of arrival as its own problem, because a room that sits empty at midnight earns nothing. Some hotels cut same-day rates to fill. Others hold rate when the market is in compression, meaning most of the comparable hotels nearby are filling at once. Look at live rates before assuming either.

Getting to the park

On foot. From the west side of downtown, Texas Avenue runs straight to the park.

METRORail. Green and Purple line trains stop at Convention District station, a block south of the ballpark with platforms on Capitol and Rusk streets. About a five-minute walk to the gates. Both lines serve the same downtown stops, so either train works for a downtown ride. METRO lists each line at every 12 minutes on weekdays, with last trips after midnight. From Midtown, ride the Red Line north (every 6 minutes on weekdays), change downtown to the Green or Purple, and go one stop east. The regular fare is $1.25, discounted to 60 cents for students, seniors 65 to 69 and riders with disabilities. Tap a credit card, debit card or phone at the validator, and a paid fare transfers free between METRO local bus, METRORail, curb2curb and Community Connector for three hours. Park & Ride buses cost the fare difference on a transfer. The rail does not reach either airport.

Driving. I-10, I-45 and I-69 all feed the east side of downtown. After the final out, Houston police close Texas Avenue at Crawford Street for about 20 minutes to let the crowd out on foot, per the Astros’ ballpark guide.

Rideshare. The pickup and drop-off zone is outside the Center Field Gate on Crawford Street, between Preston Street and Congress Avenue, per the same guide. After a game the apps surge and that curb jams. Walk a few blocks west into downtown before requesting, or take the train.

From the airport. Bush Intercontinental is about 30 minutes from downtown by car in light traffic and can run a lot longer at rush hour. Hobby is closer. METRO’s 102 bus runs downtown from Bush and the 40 from Hobby, both at the $1.25 local fare. Figure on an hour or so for either.

Bags and gates, for any game here

Gates open two hours before first pitch under the Astros’ standard policy, which the team’s ballpark guide says holds unless otherwise stated. Entry is by mobile ticket in the MLB Ballpark app.

Luggage does not get in. The bag limit is 16 by 16 by 8 inches, single compartment. A standard airline carry-on is bigger than that, and suitcases are out regardless. Multi-compartment backpacks are prohibited. Diaper bags, medical bags and single-compartment drawstring bags within the size limit are the exceptions. Bags do not have to be clear. The park has no bag check and no storage, and staff will not hold anything. Everything gets searched at the gate.

Landing on a game day therefore means hotel before ballpark. Rooms often are not ready until mid-afternoon, so ask the front desk to hold bags until check-in, and again after checkout.

Food: a clear plastic bag up to one gallon, one per person, plus one factory-sealed clear plastic water bottle up to one liter.

The money play

Three moves, in order

1
For the next date here

This event is over. Going to another date at Daikin Park? Hold a free-cancellation rate in Houston and note the cutoff date on it. Up to that date you can drop the room without a fee.

2
Re-check as the date closes in

Cancellation windows on other fans' bookings close in waves, so rooms reopen days before the event. Holding a refundable rate means every re-check can only save you money.

3
Cancel free or cash in

Plans change, matchups shift, tickets fall through. A refundable room is an option, not a commitment. Keep the best price you find and drop the rest.

FAQ

When is the next game at Daikin Park?

The 2027 regular season. The White Sox swept the Astros 2-0 in the Wild Card Series on September 29 and 30, Houston's season ended that night, and the park drew no further postseason dates. If you are planning a Houston baseball trip from here, the year-round Daikin Park guide on this site is the page for it.

Where is the White Sox-Guardians series being played, and when?

Cleveland first, then Chicago, then back to Cleveland, and Cleveland won it 3-2. Game 1 was at Progressive Field on Saturday, October 3, White Sox 3-0. Game 2 was there too, Monday, October 5, White Sox 4-3. Then Cleveland won three straight: 9-3 at Rate Field on Wednesday, October 7, 9-5 there on Thursday, October 8, and 2-0 at home in Game 5 on Saturday, October 10, José Ramírez's two-run homer the only scoring, per ESPN and CBS Sports. The Guardians then lost the ALCS to Tampa Bay in six games. The hotel logistics for both parks are in the Progressive Field and Rate Field guides on this site.

Who won the Wild Card Series at Daikin Park?

Chicago, in two games. The White Sox beat the Astros 6-3 on September 29 and 7-3 on September 30 to take the best-of-three 2-0, their first playoff series win since the 2005 World Series, which they also won against Houston. Chase Meidroth's three-run homer in the sixth broke Game 2 open. Announced attendance was 36,015 with the roof closed, up from 34,011 for Game 1. AP's Kristie Rieken noted the Astros have now lost nine straight home playoff games across nine postseason trips in the last ten years.

My Game 3 ticket was never used. Do I get a refund?

Yes. The sweep made the October 1 game unnecessary, so it was never played. The Astros' postseason ticket terms say that when the series ends before a game's scheduled date, a refund posts automatically to the card used to pay. Ticketmaster's help page says the same for playoff games that are not played. Resale is a different contract. TickPick's terms say a cancelled event gets a credit or a refund of the full fee, at TickPick's discretion except where the law requires a refund. StubHub says an officially cancelled event that is not rescheduled is entitled to a refund. If nothing has posted to your card by the end of this week, open a ticket with whoever sold you the seat.

Is there a train to Daikin Park?

Yes. METRORail's Green and Purple lines stop at Convention District station, a block south of the ballpark and about a five-minute walk from the gates. METRO lists both lines at every 12 minutes on weekdays with last trips after midnight. The regular fare is $1.25, you can tap a credit card or phone at the validator, and a paid fare transfers free between METRO services for three hours. From Midtown, ride the Red Line north, change downtown and go one stop east. The rail does not reach either Houston airport.

Can I bring luggage or a backpack into Daikin Park?

No. Bags are limited to 16 by 16 by 8 inches and a single compartment, which is smaller than a standard airline carry-on, and suitcases are not allowed. Multi-compartment backpacks are prohibited; diaper bags, medical bags and single-compartment drawstring bags within the size limit are the exceptions. The park has no bag check or storage and staff will not hold items, so leave luggage at the hotel and ask the front desk to hold it before check-in or after checkout.
