The Las Vegas Bowl lands on the one night when Las Vegas doesn’t need a football game. December 31 is the city’s biggest date of the year, the Strip becomes a four-mile pedestrian party, and roughly a third of a million people show up whether or not anyone kicks a ball. Your trip plan has to respect that order of operations: this is a New Year’s Eve trip with a bowl game in the middle of it.
The schedule is actually genius
Kickoff is 3:45 p.m. ET, which is 12:45 p.m. local. That matters more than it looks. Las Vegas Boulevard closes to vehicles from Russell Road to Sahara Avenue starting around 5 p.m. on NYE and stays closed until roughly 3 a.m., while the city fills toward a street crowd that has run around 340,000 in recent years, with a midnight fireworks-and-drones show fired from the rooftops of resorts up and down the Strip. An early-afternoon kickoff means the game ends just as the party starts. Walk out of Allegiant, cross the bridge, and you’re standing in the middle of America’s biggest New Year’s Eve with nowhere else you need to be.
Where to stay
South Strip: Mandalay Bay and Luxor. The play, full stop. Both sit about 15 minutes on foot from Allegiant Stadium via the Hacienda Avenue pedestrian bridge over I-15, which means the two hardest transportation problems of the day, getting to a stadium and getting around a closed Strip, both dissolve into walks. Every other resort on the Boulevard adds distance through the densest crowd in the country.
Mid-Strip. Fine for the party, worse for the game. Once the Boulevard closes, the trip from Caesars-latitude resorts to the stadium is a long walk or a creative rideshare routing on the back streets. Doable with the early kickoff, since you’ll head to the stadium before the closure, but the walk home is on you.
Downtown / Fremont Street. The value tier, with its own giant NYE party under the canopy. Rates run meaningfully below the Strip, and the game commute is a straightforward ride down I-15 before the closures bite. If Strip pricing is out of range, this is the answer that still feels like Vegas.
Rentals for groups. The residential grid south and west of the stadium, Spring Valley and the Enterprise blocks, carries deep short-term-rental supply. On the night when resort rooms hit their annual peak and resort fees sting most, a six-person house can genuinely undercut three hotel rooms. You give up the bridge walk and the stumble-home-from-the-fireworks position, and NYE rideshares need booking discipline, so this is the money play rather than the convenience play.
Booking mechanics: the announcement doesn’t matter here
Most bowls have a simple rhythm: pairing announced on Selection Sunday, December 6, then a 48-hour rush. The Las Vegas Bowl breaks that rhythm, because the other 340,000 guests booked without checking the college football calendar. NYE compression sets Strip pricing months in advance, and revenue managers here run the most sophisticated event-pricing operation in the hotel industry; rates ratchet up as the 31st approaches and discounts close out early.
So the play is simple and urgent: book a refundable south-Strip room as far ahead as you can stand, and treat December 6 as the day you decide whether to keep it, not the day you start shopping. Watch minimum-stay controls too; two- and three-night minimums are standard for the NYE window, and staying through January 1 is the right itinerary anyway. Harry Reid International is 10 minutes from the stadium, and a January 1 morning flight beats a December 31 escape in every way that counts.
Allegiant pulls a remarkable double this season: the Las Vegas Bowl on New Year’s Eve, then the CFP National Championship in the same building on January 25. Year-round detail on the stadium and the bridge walk is in our Allegiant Stadium guide.

FAQ
Can you walk from the Strip to Allegiant Stadium?
From the south end, yes. Mandalay Bay and Luxor sit about a 15-minute walk from the stadium via the Hacienda Avenue pedestrian bridge over I-15. On this date that walk is the whole ballgame, because Strip traffic dies at the New Year's Eve closure.
What happens to the Strip on New Year's Eve?
It closes. Las Vegas Boulevard shuts to vehicles from Russell Road to Sahara Avenue, roughly 5 p.m. until around 3 a.m., for a street party that has drawn crowds in the 340,000 range, capped by a midnight fireworks show launched from resort rooftops. The early-afternoon kickoff gets the game in just before the closure locks everything down.
How expensive are Las Vegas hotels on December 31?
It's the most expensive night of the city's year. Bowl fans are bidding against the NYE party crowd for every room, and rates only climb as the date approaches. Book a refundable room months ahead; waiting for the December 6 matchup announcement costs real money here.
Should I fly home the night of the game?
No. The Strip closure and NYE crowds make a December 31 evening airport run miserable, and you'd be leaving Las Vegas at midnight on New Year's Eve, which is its own argument. Stay through January 1; flights that morning are calm and the fireworks are free.
Is a vacation rental worth it for the Las Vegas Bowl?
For groups, look just off-Strip. Vegas rental supply in the neighborhoods south and west of the stadium is deep, and on NYE pricing a house for six can undercut three resort rooms plus resort fees. The trade is losing the walk-to-stadium and walk-to-party position, so budget for rides booked early.
When is the 2026 SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl?
Thursday, December 31, 2026 (New Year's Eve). Kickoff is 3:45 p.m. ET on ESPN. Hotel demand still moves the moment the participating teams are selected in early December.
When should I book a hotel for the 2026 SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl?
Book a refundable rate the day your team accepts the bid. Fan bases get roughly three weeks' notice, and Las Vegas rates climb steadily from selection day to kickoff. Free-cancellation bookings let you lock today's price with no risk.
