The Cactus Bowl comes home in 2026. After years downtown at Chase Field as the Guaranteed Rate and then Rate Bowl, the game returns to Arizona State’s Mountain America Stadium — its first kickoff there since 2015 — with the old Cactus name restored by the Fiesta Sports Foundation. For traveling fans this is a straight upgrade: instead of a ballpark football field in downtown Phoenix, you get a real college stadium with a bar-and-hotel district at its doorstep and a light-rail station next to the gates. Get the geography right first

Arizona runs three bowls this cycle in three separate cities, and every December some family books the wrong one. The Cactus Bowl is in Tempe, the college town on Phoenix’s east side. The Fiesta Bowl — a CFP quarterfinal on December 30 — is in Glendale, 25 miles west across the metro. The Arizona Bowl is in Tucson, a two-hour drive southeast. Hotels that are perfect for one are wrong for the others. Everything below is Tempe.

Where to stay

Downtown Tempe / Mill Avenue (walk to the gates). Mill Avenue is ASU’s front porch: a dense strip of bars, restaurants, and hotels that runs right up to the stadium district. Stay here and the entire trip is on foot — pregame, game, postgame, and Tempe Town Lake for a morning walk. Inventory ranges from student-budget to full-service; it’s not huge, though, and it’s the first thing both fanbases book.

Old Town Scottsdale (the resort version). About 20 minutes north. Winter-resort Arizona — pool decks, golf, a restaurant scene that outclasses anything near campus. Late December is the start of Scottsdale’s high season, so you’re paying resort-winter rates, but for fans building a warm-weather holiday around one football game, this is the version to build.

Downtown Phoenix (the rail play). One Valley Metro Rail ride from the stadium, with big-box hotel depth that Tempe lacks. If Mill Avenue sells out after Selection Sunday, this is the escape valve that keeps the trip car-free.

Getting in: the ten-minute airport

Phoenix Sky Harbor sits barely ten minutes from Tempe — one of the shortest airport-to-stadium runs in bowl season — and you don’t even need the rideshare. The free PHX Sky Train connects the terminals to the 44th Street/Washington rail station, and Valley Metro Rail runs from there into Tempe, where the Veterans Way/College Avenue station sits immediately beside Mountain America Stadium. Fans staying on Mill Avenue can genuinely do this whole trip without a car. If you drive anyway — say, pairing it with the Fiesta Bowl four days later — ASU’s stadium-area garages are prebook-friendly, and the Loop 202 puts Scottsdale and Phoenix within easy reach.

Game day

A 5:30 local kickoff the day after Christmas means afternoon tailgating in mid-60s sun and a second half in genuine desert cold; the temperature swing catches Midwestern fans off guard in the wrong direction. Mill Avenue fills from lunch onward and is a five-minute walk from the gates, so the pregame is a bar crawl, not a parking lot. The stadium’s setting is one of the sport’s odd gems — built into a saddle between two desert buttes, with “A” Mountain rising behind one end zone. Climb it in the morning; it’s a 15-minute hike and the view covers the whole Valley.

Booking mechanics

Pairings drop on Selection Sunday, December 6, and this market has a squeeze most bowl towns don’t: the game lands at the front edge of Phoenix’s winter high season, when snowbird and holiday demand already firms up rates before a single fan books. Big 12 vs. Big Ten also guarantees at least one flying fanbase competing for the same December 26–27 nights. So the 48-hour rush here is real but asymmetric — Mill Avenue’s limited stock goes almost immediately, while Phoenix and Scottsdale absorb the rest at rising prices. Hold a refundable Tempe room now; if the draw sends you elsewhere, cancel. And if there’s any chance your team makes the Fiesta Bowl instead, hold both dates refundable until December 6 sorts it out. That costs nothing and solves everything.

Vacation rentals

The Valley is one of America’s deepest short-term-rental markets, and December is its season. Tempe’s neighborhoods south of campus and the blocks around Tempe Town Lake carry house-sized listings walkable or one short ride from the stadium — for a crew of four-plus, routinely cheaper than two Mill Avenue hotel rooms. Scottsdale’s rental pool is enormous and pool-equipped, the family-holiday version. Book refundable-where-possible before Selection Sunday and watch cleaning fees on one-night stays; rentals here price best at three nights and up.
