The short answer
The 2026 Cincinnati Open is done. Arthur Fils beat Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 and Coco Gauff beat Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-4, both on Sunday, August 23, 2026, and the event guide has the full story of how the fortnight went. The 2027 dates are posted: August 10-22, 2027, counted from the first qualifying day. The week to aim at is Tuesday to Thursday, August 17-19.
That last call has one moving part, and this page exists to explain it. The Cincinnati Open is really four trips at four prices: cheap qualifying days, a crowded first weekend, a value-rich second-week midweek, and a premium finals weekend. The thing that separates the four is the Kings Island calendar. The park next door shares the tournament’s two I-71 interchanges, and the day it stops daily operation is the day the roads and the nearby hotels exhale. In 2026 the last daily day was Sunday, August 16.
One tournament, four different trips
Most Cincinnati Open advice treats the fortnight as a single event. It isn’t. Here’s the 2027 fortnight on one table. The Kings Island column is the 2026 pattern, because the 2027 park calendar isn’t out yet.

A note on counting. The tournament’s schedule page lists Tuesday, August 10 through Sunday, August 22 and says the timing of the 2027 finals and the complete match schedule come later. The WTA lists the same event as August 12-22, 2027, because the tours count from the main draw. We count from qualifying day one, the way the tournament does, which is also why this page dated 2026 as August 11-23 while the tours dated it August 13-23.
The Kings Island caveat, stated once
The 2026 park calendar, as logged by third-party crowd calendars that record the posted hours (checked October 12, 2026): open daily through Sunday, August 16; closed Monday to Thursday, August 17-20; open Friday, August 21 from 5 to 10 p.m. only; open Saturday and Sunday; closed again August 24-27. Daily operation ending on a mid-August Sunday, then Friday-to-Sunday through Labor Day, is the pattern.
The 2027 calendar is not posted. Kings Island typically publishes it in winter, and until then the 2027 flip date is a guess. The guess matters. The tournament’s first Sunday is August 15, 2027, a day earlier than 2026’s. If the park’s last daily day lands there, the value midweek has dark roads again. If the park runs one week longer, the midweek collision returns and the quiet-roads half of this plan weakens, while the hotel half still holds. Check the park calendar before you lock in the week.
The four trips, ranked by what you’re optimizing
The bargain scout (Aug 10-12, 2027). Qualifying and the opening round are the cheapest hotel nights and the easiest access of the fortnight. You’ll share the interchanges with a fully running Kings Island, so time your drives away from the park’s nightly close. Best for day-trippers. The full-throttle family weekend (Aug 13-15, 2027). Maximum tennis volume, maximum everything else. The first Saturday and Sunday are the family peak at the tennis and prime season next door. Accept the traffic, book the closest ring you can get, and put the coaster day inside the window while the park is still open daily. Best for families running the double.
The connoisseur window (Aug 17-19, 2027). Tuesday through Thursday of finals week is the fortnight’s arbitrage. The draw has boiled down to seeded players. Evening sessions run cooler than the daytime bakes, which typically push heat indexes into the mid-90s. The suburban business-corridor hotels sit between their August weekend peaks. And if Kings Island follows its 2026 pattern, the two shared exits actually move. This is the trip to book. Best for anyone going for the tennis, period.
Finals weekend (Aug 20-22, 2027). The showcase and the spike. The park is back open Friday to Sunday, so the traffic collision returns exactly when demand peaks. Treat these three nights as their own booking problem and secure them before anything else in your plan. The event guide has the booking order, session structure, parking and bag-policy detail.
What the 2026 fortnight taught about the bet
Three things, none of them about which week has the best tennis.
The cheap days carry the weather risk. Qualifying opened Tuesday, August 11, 2026 with a 10:03 a.m. weather alert. The 10:30 start slid past noon, rain stopped play again around 3:30 p.m., and only 12 of 48 scheduled matches finished, per the Cincinnati Enquirer’s coverage. Wednesday, August 12 was worse: the gates never opened, and at 4 p.m. the tournament cancelled the whole 33-match qualifying session, saying leftover matches might be played behind closed doors or roll into Thursday’s main-draw start. A National Weather Service flood warning sat over Warren County into Wednesday night. The bargain-scout trip is still the bargain. Just hold a second session, or a refundable room that lets you slide a day, because a qualifying washout is the one the schedule can’t fully make up.
Finals weekend is a real three-day weekend now. 2026 was the first year of Sunday finals; the tournament moved them off Monday with the ATP and WTA, and tournament director Bob Moran said a Sunday final would deliver the best experience. Both 2026 finals went Sunday, August 23. The 2027 schedule ends on Sunday, August 22. So the premium block is Friday-Saturday-Sunday, exactly the three nights the business-corridor hotels also sell to leisure travelers, and the three nights Kings Island reopens.
The Friday collision is a night-session collision. Kings Island’s Friday, August 21, 2026 hours were 5 to 10 p.m. only. A 10 p.m. park close lands right on the night-session exit. If your Friday semifinal runs long, wait out the first wave on the grounds instead of idling on Kings Island Drive. On Saturday and Sunday the park ran full days, so the squeeze spread out.
The bed decision, compressed
The lodging map doesn’t change year to year, and the Lindner Family Tennis Center guide walks every corridor: the Kings Island exits, Fields Ertel, the Blue Ash/Sharonville and West Chester business belts, downtown Cincinnati. For trip planning it compresses to one question. How many sessions a day are you attending?
- Two a day: sleep close. A day session in that heat followed by a night session is only survivable with a 10-minute air-conditioned retreat between them. That means the Kings Island exits or Fields Ertel, and it’s the booking to make first, because that pocket takes tournament demand and peak coaster-season families at the same time.
- One a day, evenings: the business corridors. August weekends are when weekday-corporate hotels discount, and a 15-20 minute drive to a 7 p.m. session is nothing.
- One a day, plus a real vacation: downtown Cincinnati and Over-the-Rhine. 25-30 minutes down I-71, against commuter flow both ways. Worth it if tennis is half the agenda. Budget for the post-night-session rideshare reality if you come carless.
- Four or more people, three nights or more: price a house. Mason and West Chester are subdivision country and the whole-home listings exist for Kings Island families, so they can still be open after the nearby hotels close out. Cleaning fees and stiff cancellation terms make a one- or two-night rental a bad trade against a refundable hotel rate.
When the rates actually move
This market doesn’t sell out citywide. It sells out in rings, closest to the venue first, so the surge is a sequence rather than a date. The Mason/Kings Island pocket tightens the moment dates are certain, and for 2027 they are certain now. Fields Ertel tightens as the event approaches. The business corridors and downtown mostly hold until the two tournament weekends and stay reasonable midweek.
Your timeline, whichever week you pick. Book the Mason ring refundable now against August 10-22, 2027 if proximity matters. Watch for the ticket on-sale: in 2026, packages went on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 29 and single sessions at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 12, each with a pre-sale the day before for people registered on the tournament’s site. As of October 12, 2026 the tournament’s tickets page showed only 2026 content and no 2027 on-sale date. Re-shop in late July, when summer-vacation cancellations return rooms to inventory, and again a week out, when other fans’ refundable bookings hit their cutoffs. The mechanics are in the refundable rate playbook. The Mason rule: you only trade down the rings by choice, never up by necessity.
The sample play: three nights, second week
For the trip most readers should take, here is the shape of it on the 2027 calendar. Fly or drive in on Tuesday, August 17. CVG and Dayton are both about 45-50 minutes out and worth cross-shopping, since Mason sits near their midpoint. Tuesday night session to acclimate. Wednesday: sleep in, lunch at Deerfield Towne Center, then the day-plus-night doubleheader with the hotel break between. Thursday: outer courts in the morning, a quarterfinal-quality night session, and, if the park calendar cooperates, clear roads home. Drive out Friday morning as finals-weekend demand arrives behind you.
Three nights, the sharpest part of the draw, on the second week’s softest rates. The one thing to re-check before you book it is the Kings Island calendar, and the one thing to re-check after is whether the tournament has posted session times, which it says come later.
