The Sun Bowl is the anti-Vegas of New Year’s Eve bowls. Same date, opposite market: one of America’s oldest bowl games, played in a concrete horseshoe carved into the Franklin Mountains foothills, in a city where a downtown hotel on December 31 costs what a parking spot costs in other bowl towns. If your team lands here, you’ve drawn the cheapest great trip of bowl season.
Downtown El Paso. The call for almost everyone. The historic core around San Jacinto Plaza has El Paso’s walkable restaurant-and-bar blocks and its most characterful hotel stock, about two miles from the stadium. New Year’s Eve barely moves this market; you’ll pay a fraction of what the same night costs in Tampa, Vegas, or Nashville, and downtown is where the city’s own NYE celebrating happens after the game.
The I-10 corridor near UTEP. A band of standard highway hotels runs along Mesa Street and I-10 within a mile or two of campus. Nothing romantic, everything practical: closest beds to the stadium, easy in and out for the drive-in crowd, rates that make a two-night stay painless.
East side / airport. El Paso International is about 15 minutes from the stadium, with the usual airport cluster around it. Fine as a fallback; unnecessary in a market this soft.
Rentals. El Paso’s vacation-rental supply concentrates in the Kern Place and Sunset Heights neighborhoods, the historic blocks directly between downtown and UTEP. A group can land a house a 15-minute walk from the stadium here, which no hotel can offer. In a market where hotels are this cheap, the rental case is about location and a kitchen rather than savings, but a Sunset Heights house on game day is a genuinely great base.
Sun Bowl Stadium sits on UTEP’s campus, uphill from everything, and the approach roads pinch on game day. The good options, in order:
The streetcar. El Paso’s restored streetcar loops from downtown up through the Mesa/Oregon corridor past the UTEP campus, and it’s currently free to ride. It won’t drop you at the gate, but it eliminates the parking problem for downtown-based fans, leaving a walk up to the stadium.
Shuttles. On game days Sun Metro has run shuttle routes to the stadium from the Union Plaza transit terminal downtown, and UTEP’s own operation runs a complimentary shuttle from the SB10 lot to the north entrance beginning two hours before kickoff.
Driving. Campus lots serve the stadium and the free ones (SB2, SB3, and the SCG garage on UTEP game days) fill hours before kickoff. For a bowl-sized crowd, treat 10 a.m. local as your arrival target, or skip the whole question and shuttle in.
This is the piece that decides your booking urgency. The Sun Bowl’s ACC vs. Pac-12-legacy pairing gets announced on Selection Sunday, December 6, and what happens next depends entirely on geography. Draw a Southwest team, an Arizona school or a mountain program, and I-10 and I-25 deliver fans by the thousands: Tucson is four and a half hours, Phoenix six, Albuquerque under four. Those fans book El Paso’s limited close-in hotel band within days. Draw two fly-in fan bases and the market barely ripples, because El Paso’s room supply comfortably swallows a coastal crowd that has to connect through Dallas or Phoenix to get here.
You can’t know which version you’ll get, and you don’t have to. Rooms here are cheap enough that a refundable downtown booking made now is nearly free insurance. Make it, watch December 6, and either keep it or drop it.
One last note on the day itself: kickoff is 2 p.m. ET, which is noon in El Paso. Expect sunshine and 50s at kick, then a fast temperature drop when the shadow of the Franklins crosses the bowl in the second half. The locals bring blankets to a game named after the sun. Follow the locals.

The El Paso streetcar, currently free to ride, loops from downtown up past the UTEP campus. On game days Sun Metro has also run shuttles from the downtown Union Plaza transit terminal. Rideshare from downtown is a 10-minute trip either way.
Campus lots, and the free ones go early. For UTEP games, lots SB2, SB3, and SCG are free but fill hours out, and a complimentary shuttle runs from the SB10 lot to the north entrance starting two hours before kickoff. For the bowl, arrive early or park downtown and shuttle in.

It's one of the oldest bowls in the country and it's traditionally played December 31, and the crowd drives I-10: Tucson is about four and a half hours, Phoenix six, Albuquerque under four on I-25. When the December 6 pairing includes a Southwest fan base, the interstate does the rest.
Desert winter: usually sunny, often 50s by the noon local kickoff, dropping hard once the sun dips behind the Franklin Mountains. Bring layers for the second half. Snow is rare but the wind is not.
