The ReliaQuest Bowl gives you a football game and New Year’s Eve in the same city on the same day without making you choose, which no other bowl on the calendar quite manages. Kickoff is noon ET on December 31, so the game ends in the mid-afternoon Florida sun and hands you straight to the biggest party night of the year. Plan the trip around that handoff.

Where to stay

Westshore. Tampa’s business-hotel district sits between the airport and the stadium, starting about two miles from the gates. This is the highest hotel density anywhere near Raymond James, it’s a five-minute rideshare to the lots, and on a leisure-heavy holiday week the corporate-oriented properties here often price softer than downtown. If the trip is about the game first, base here.

Downtown and the Riverwalk. Fifteen to twenty minutes east of the stadium, and where Tampa’s New Year’s Eve actually happens: the Riverwalk, the Water Street district, and the bars stacked around the arena. Staying here means a longer game-day hop but zero logistics for the night that follows. On December 31 that trade is usually worth it.

Ybor City. Tampa’s historic Latin quarter runs the rowdiest NYE in the region along Seventh Avenue, and its boutique hotels and rentals put you inside it. The TECO streetcar links Ybor and downtown, so you can base in one and party in the other. Stadium distance is similar to downtown’s.

The rental play. South Tampa, specifically Hyde Park and the SoHo strip, is the group answer. Bungalow rentals sit 10 minutes from the stadium and 10 from downtown, and on a night when every hotel in town is charging New Year’s rates, a four-to-six person house frequently beats two rooms by a wide margin. The usual caveat applies double on a holiday: check the cancellation terms, because a refundable hotel rate is the better thing to hold until the matchup is set.

Getting to Raymond James

There is no rail to the stadium, full stop. Your options are driving with a pre-purchased spot in the official lots, a cash lot in the surrounding blocks, or rideshare. Two timing notes that matter on this specific date: the noon kickoff means lots and traffic build from mid-morning, earlier than Tampa’s usual game rhythm, and the postgame rideshare surge is real but short, since the crowd disperses toward an evening of other plans. Tampa International is astonishingly close, about 10 minutes from the stadium, which makes this one of the easiest fly-in bowls in the country. A same-day January 1 flight home is very doable; flying out late on the 31st means missing the point of the date entirely.

Booking strategy for a New Year’s Eve game

Here’s the mechanic that makes this bowl different from the December 26-30 crowd: the hotel market doesn’t wait for football. December 31 is a compression night in Tampa on its own, and revenue managers price the NYE demand months out. The bowl pairing, SEC vs. Big Ten, lands on Selection Sunday, December 6, and the announcement rush stacks on top of a market that’s already firm.

So the play is the early refundable hold: lock a Westshore or downtown room now at a cancellable rate, then let December 6 sort it out. If your team draws Tampa, you’re set while the announcement-day bookers pay the NYE premium. Watch for minimum-stay controls on the night of the 31st; two-night minimums are common, and honestly, staying through January 1 is the right call anyway. Nobody wants an airport at 8 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
