Kickoff is Wednesday, December 23 at 2 p.m. ET, 1 p.m. local, on ESPN in the Caesars Superdome, Sun Belt against Conference USA, the pairing this game has hosted since its 2001 debut. Same building as the Sugar Bowl, same walkable downtown, at a fraction of what that week costs. The whole trip runs on foot.
Why December 23 is the sweet spot
New Orleans hotel pricing runs on a calendar every regular visitor learns: conventions and festivals spike it, and the New Year’s stretch, anchored this season by the Sugar Bowl’s January 15 CFP semifinal, is the winter’s compression peak. December 23 sits in the valley. Convention season is done, the New Year’s crowd hasn’t arrived, and downtown’s massive room count is chasing not many travelers. For a bowl fan, that means CBD hotels a 10-minute walk from the Dome at rates the same buildings won’t show again until deep in January.
The date’s one tax is the flight home. December 24 is peak holiday air travel, so either book that flight immediately when the matchup lands or, better, stay through Christmas. New Orleans on Christmas Day, Réveillon dinners and quiet Quarter streets, is a legitimately great place to be stranded.

The CBD, on and around Poydras Street. The answer. Poydras runs from the river straight to the Superdome, lined with the big-brand towers that make up the city’s deepest hotel stock. The French Quarter. Twenty minutes’ walk from the Dome, and you’re paying for atmosphere, not convenience: boutique hotels on Royal and Chartres, courtyards, and the city’s signature streets out the door. Right choice if this trip is 30 percent football and 70 percent New Orleans.
The Warehouse District. Between the CBD and the convention center, quieter blocks, good galleries and restaurants, same easy walk to everything. The value pick when Poydras pricing firms up.
Vacation rentals cluster in the Marigny and Bywater below the Quarter and in the Garden District along the streetcar line, and for groups doing multiple nights they price well in this soft window. Two caveats: New Orleans regulates short-term rentals aggressively, so book only clearly licensed listings, and cancellation terms are stiffer than the refundable hotel rates this particular week hands out cheaply. Groups of five-plus should look; couples shouldn’t bother.
Game day, walkable version
There is no parking strategy in this guide because you shouldn’t need one. From a CBD hotel, the walk up Poydras to the Dome takes 10 to 15 minutes; from the Quarter, 20. The Superdome is indoors and climate-controlled, so late-December weather, typically 50s and changeable, only matters for the walk. A 1 p.m. local Wednesday kickoff means gates around 11:30, a pregame lunch in the CBD rather than a tailgate, and a final whistle around 4:30 that hands you the entire evening.
That evening is the point. Late December is Réveillon season, when restaurants across the Quarter and CBD run holiday prix-fixe menus reviving a Creole Christmas tradition, and City Park glows with Celebration in the Oaks. Book the postgame dinner reservation when you book the room; the good Réveillon tables on December 23 go early.
Fans driving in, and the Sun Belt footprint means many will, should park once at the hotel and leave the car until departure. Event parking near the Dome exists but downtown garages plus two feet are strictly better.

Selection Day is Sunday, December 6. The pairing usually features at least one school within a tank of gas, and when a Louisiana team lands the bid the local walk-up crowd swells, but hotel supply this deep barely blinks; this is not a market you race for rooms in. Book the flight home first, the refundable CBD room second, the Réveillon reservation third. Total damage for a two-night version of this trip, at this date’s rates, embarrasses most bowl cities. In two weeks the same hotels will be charging CFP semifinal prices.
