Most bowl trips make you choose between the airport, the stadium, and the fun part of town. Albuquerque doesn’t. University Stadium sits on UNM’s south campus two miles from the Sunport, the runway and the field close enough that you could land at 11 a.m. and make the 12:30 kickoff. The complication isn’t geography. It’s the calendar: this game is played on Christmas Eve.

The Christmas Eve schedule, and what it does to your trip

Kickoff is Thursday, December 24 at 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, which is 12:30 p.m. in Albuquerque. A normal game wraps around 4 local. That leaves a theoretical window to catch an evening flight home, and every year some fans try it. Understand what you’re betting: December 24 departure boards go quiet early, rebooking options on a delay are close to zero, and the alternative to making your flight is Christmas morning in an airport Marriott.

Book the night of the 24th. Flights on Christmas Day itself are often the cheapest of the whole holiday stretch, and you get the game without watching the clock. Better still, Old Town Albuquerque does its famous luminaria displays on Christmas Eve — thousands of candle-lit paper bags lining the adobe plaza — which turns the stopover into the best accidental itinerary in bowl season.

Where to stay

The airport corridor (Yale and Gibson). Five minutes from the stadium gates, walkable to the terminal, and the cheapest functional option. If this trip is purely about the game, stay here and stop reading. The trade-off is scenery: it’s an airport hotel row, and dinner means driving.

Nob Hill. The old Route 66 strip along Central Avenue, bordering UNM’s main campus about ten minutes north of the stadium. This is where the restaurants, breweries, and neon are, and where visiting fans who want a pregame scene should base. Rates stay modest even on bowl week.

Old Town and downtown. Fifteen minutes northwest. The adobe plaza, the museums, and on the night of the 24th, the luminarias. Downtown’s hotels are the bigger boxes; Old Town skews small and historic. Either works fine for the game with a short drive.

Albuquerque is one of the least expensive hotel markets on the bowl calendar, and a pre-Christmas Thursday is a soft night everywhere. You are not fighting for rooms here. You’re fighting for flights.

Getting in and parking

Fly into Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ), then don’t overthink the rest. There’s no transit link worth planning around; it’s a drive-and-park stadium with lots on the south campus, and a rideshare from anywhere listed above runs 5–15 minutes. If you rent a car, note that I-25 runs right past both airport and stadium, so even a Santa Fe side trip (an hour north) folds into this weekend easily. Plenty of fans turn the trip into ski days at Sandia Peak or Taos after the game — December in northern New Mexico rewards the extra day.

Game day at 5,100 feet

University Stadium opened in 1960, holds 39,224, and sits at 5,100 feet of elevation — worth knowing if your team’s roster spent the season at sea level, and worth knowing for you too, because high-desert sun at midday reads warmer than the thermometer says while the shaded side of the stadium never does. Sunglasses and a real coat, both. The tailgate lots fill with green-chile smoke by late morning; whatever you eat here, the correct answer to “red or green?” is “Christmas,” which on December 24 is also just accurate.

The booking window

Pairings are announced on Selection Sunday, December 6, 2026. In big bowl markets that starts a 48-hour scramble; in Albuquerque the scramble is gentler, but the Mountain West tie-in means a drivable fanbase — Boise, Fort Collins, El Paso are all realistic road trips — and the airport-corridor hotels are small enough to actually sell out. The move: hold a refundable room in your preferred neighborhood now, then re-shop after December 6. Rates here are low enough that the refundable premium costs almost nothing, and the thing you genuinely can’t fix late is the flight. Christmas-week airfare rises as seats vanish, not on a schedule, so buy the flight the day your team’s bowl projection firms up.

Vacation rentals

Albuquerque’s rental stock is casitas — little detached adobe guesthouses all over Nob Hill and the neighborhoods near UNM, many under what two hotel rooms cost. For a couple, the hotel usually wins on price once cleaning fees land. For a family or a crew of four-plus spending Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in town, a casita with a kitchen and a kiva fireplace is the better holiday, and Vrbo carries plenty of them. Check the cancellation terms before Selection Sunday; a refundable hotel rate is the safer hold until the matchup is real.
