The Independence Bowl is the survivor of bowl season. Shreveport has hosted this game since 1976, through five decades of conference realignment and title-sponsor turnover, at the same 50,000-seat fairgrounds stadium that’s been standing since 1924. The 2026 edition kicks off Tuesday, December 22 at 8:30 p.m. ET, 7:30 local, on ESPN. And the trip has a personality no other bowl matches: your hotel is almost certainly a casino.

The casino-hotel market, explained

Shreveport-Bossier’s lodging is organized around gaming resorts strung along both banks of the Red River, and they’re the right call for a bowl trip, not just the available one. On the Shreveport side, Bally’s and Sam’s Town sit downtown near the riverfront, steps from each other. Across the river in Bossier City are Horseshoe, Margaritaville, and Live!, with Boomtown further out. These are full resorts: multiple restaurants, late bars, entertainment rooms, and hundreds of rooms each, which is why a bowl crowd rarely strains the market.

All of them sit about 10 minutes from Independence Stadium, which is west of downtown on the fairgrounds. There’s no walkable-to-the-stadium option in this market and no reason to want one; the postgame scene is back at the casinos anyway, and a 7:30 local kickoff ends near 11 p.m., exactly when a casino floor is the only thing in town still fully awake.

If casinos aren’t your thing, a band of standard chain hotels runs along I-20 and near the airport, cheaper and quieter. And the vacation-rental market here is small but real: the Highland and South Highlands neighborhoods list historic homes that suit a family or a group who’d rather have a kitchen than a buffet. For most travelers, though, this is the rare bowl where the resort hotel is both the convenient answer and the entertainment plan.

Game day at the fairgrounds

Independence Stadium sits on the Louisiana State Fairgrounds off Pershing Boulevard, with the large flat parking acreage fairgrounds provide, and the tailgate culture to match. This bowl’s crowd skews drive-in, Texas and mid-South fanbases arriving by car, and the lots fill with a scene closer to a college campus Saturday than a sterile NFL perimeter. Arrive 90 minutes early, bring what you’d bring to a regular-season road game, and eat something fried from a local stand.

Now the warning every first-timer needs: December 22 in Shreveport is cold. Louisiana’s reputation doesn’t apply 250 miles inland at night; typical late-December lows here reach the 30s, the stadium is open, and the entire game runs after dark. Fans who pack for “the South” spend the second half in the concourse. Fans who pack a real coat, hat, and something warm to sit on are fine.

The one food instruction: John’s Seafood, within walking distance of the stadium, is the local pregame institution for calabash-style seafood. Otherwise eat downtown or at the resorts.

Getting there

Drive if you reasonably can. I-20 runs straight through Shreveport, putting Dallas-Fort Worth three hours west and Jackson three hours east, and the bowl’s traditional footprint, Texas schools, Louisiana schools, the American and the old Pac-12 agreement, means most of the crowd arrives on it. Shreveport Regional Airport is 10 minutes from downtown but small, with connection-dependent service that gets expensive around Christmas; flying into DFW and driving the last three hours is often cheaper and more reliable than flying into SHV, especially booked late.

Around town you’ll want the car regardless. The stadium, the casinos, and the restaurants are all short drives apart, parking is abundant everywhere, and rideshares exist but thin out late.

Rooms and timing

Matchups arrive around Selection Day, Sunday, December 6. The market’s depth works in your favor: thousands of casino-resort rooms against two traveling fanbases three days before Christmas means genuine scarcity is rare. What does happen is sorting; the riverfront towers with the best restaurants book their good rooms first, and midweek pre-Christmas casino rates, which start reasonable, firm up as the fanbases commit. Book refundable the week of the announcement, aim for the property whose amenities you’ll actually use, and put the savings on the blackjack table or don’t. Either way the room was cheap for what bowl week costs elsewhere.
