Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl 2026 hotel guide

Every other bowl guide on this site starts with the hotel. This one starts with the flight, because the Hawai’i Bowl is not a hotel problem. Waikiki holds one of the largest concentrations of resort rooms in the world and something is always bookable. Christmas-week seats from the mainland are the thing that vanishes, and they vanish gradually and then suddenly from October on. This is a destination trip that happens to include football. Plan it in that order.

The venue: college football’s smallest big game

The University of Hawai’i confirmed the 2026 date on June 3: Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24, at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex on the Mānoa campus — the bowl’s fifth straight year there while the new Aloha Stadium Entertainment District gets built in Halawa. Ching holds 15,194 after an expansion from its original 9,346, which makes this the smallest venue in bowl season by a wide margin. That cuts both ways: tickets are genuinely scarce when Hawai’i is in it, and there isn’t a bad sightline in the building. Kickoff is 2 p.m. local, 7 p.m. ET on ESPN, and the pregame Pāʻina on the Path opens three hours early with live Hawaiian music, a beer garden, and food vendors along the campus walkways. It feels more like a big high school rivalry night than a stadium event. Most fans who’ve done both prefer it.

Where to stay

Waikiki. The default and the right call. You’re 2.5 miles from campus, ten to fifteen minutes by rideshare, and everything else about the trip — beach, dinner, Christmas lights along Kalākaua Avenue — is on foot. Waikiki pricing runs the full spectrum from hostel-adjacent to $1,000-a-night beachfront; the mid-tier towers a block or two off the sand are where value lives during Christmas week.

Ala Moana. One neighborhood west, near the giant mall and slightly closer to campus. Marginally calmer, marginally cheaper, same logistics.

Ko Olina or the North Shore. Only if the football is a footnote on a longer family trip. Ko Olina’s resorts are 45 minutes west; the North Shore, with its huge December surf, is an hour-plus. Doable for one game day, but you’ll feel the drive.

The honest rate warning: the week between Christmas and New Year’s is Oahu’s peak of peaks, and hotel revenue managers here don’t discount it — many properties carry multi-night minimums through the holiday stretch. What saves you is scale. Rooms stay available even late; they just cost what Christmas in Hawai’i costs.

Getting there and around

Fly into Honolulu (HNL), 20–30 minutes from Waikiki. Skip the rental car unless you’re doing island days — Waikiki parking charges resort-garage prices, and campus parking on game day is limited. TheBus is genuinely useful here: Route 13 links Waikiki to the Mānoa campus in about 21 minutes for $3, and it’ll be full of green jerseys on game day. Rideshare works fine in both directions; the postgame wait is real but short by mainland-stadium standards because the crowd is 15,000, not 65,000.

The booking sequence for this one

Different from every other bowl. Flights first, months out, the moment your team looks bowl-bound with a Hawai’i-tie-in path — Mountain West fans especially, since that’s the anchor tie-in. Matchups become official on Selection Sunday, December 6, but a Christmas-week fare bought on December 7 will hurt. Hotels second: hold something refundable early, re-shop after the 6th. Tickets last; at a 15,194-seat venue that’s the reverse of normal bowl logic, so if Hawai’i hosts, buy tickets the week they’re released rather than gambling on the secondary market.

Vacation rentals: read the rules first

Oahu regulates short-term rentals hard. Under Honolulu’s ordinance, most rentals outside resort-zoned areas require 30-day minimum stays, which means the legal sub-30-day supply concentrates in resort-zoned Waikiki condo buildings and condo-hotels. For a family staying a week-plus, a legal Waikiki condo with a kitchen routinely beats two hotel rooms, and Vrbo lists plenty of them — just confirm the listing shows a registration number and don’t book anything that dodges the question. Airbnb carries similar Waikiki condo inventory; there’s no commission in it for us, but for long family stays it’s worth the comparison. For a two-night football hit, take the hotel and keep the refundable rate.
