The First Responder Bowl is Dallas at college scale: a 32,000-seat campus stadium on SMU’s manicured Hilltop, a train that actually goes there, and a 3:30 kickoff that leaves the evening free in one of the best restaurant cities in the country. It’s the easiest logistics of any Metroplex football trip, including the NFL ones.
Gerald J. Ford Stadium sits on the SMU campus at Mockingbird Lane and Central Expressway, and DART’s SMU/Mockingbird station sits directly across the highway, served by the Red, Orange, and Blue lines. From the station it’s about a half-mile walk to the gates, and on SMU game days a shuttle has run the gap for anyone who’d rather ride. Fares are the bargain of bowl season: $3 a ride, $6 for a day pass, and many DART stations offer free parking, which turns the whole suburban Metroplex into a park-and-ride for this game.
Compare that with the Cotton Bowl’s stadium in Arlington, which has no rail at all, and you understand why locals consider this the civilized football venue.
Uptown. The call for most visiting fans. The McKinney Avenue corridor stacks restaurants, bars, and hotels at every price point, and you’re a short hop from Red/Orange line stations for the one-seat ride to SMU. After the game, this is where the evening is.
Downtown. The big-box and convention hotels, directly on all three useful DART lines. Slightly less charm than Uptown, often better rates, identical game-day logistics. Weekend-of-a-holiday-week downtown Dallas prices lean soft, because the business travel that sets this market’s rates hasn’t returned from the holidays yet.
Mockingbird Station and the Park Cities edge. The closest beds to the stadium cluster around Mockingbird Station’s shops and along Central Expressway. Limited supply, maximum convenience. If a zero-commute game day matters more than nightlife, look here first, and book promptly after the pairing drops, because there isn’t much of it.
Rentals. The M Streets and Lower Greenville, the craftsman-bungalow neighborhoods just east of SMU, are the group play: a house within five minutes of both the stadium and Greenville Avenue’s bar strip. For four-plus fans, it routinely beats two Uptown hotel rooms, and early January is a quiet, cheap stretch for Dallas rentals. Hold a refundable hotel until December 6 all the same; rental cancellation terms are stingier.
The 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff (2:30 local) is the friendly slot: late enough for a proper lunch, early enough that the postgame evening is fully intact. Campus lots and garages serve drivers and sell in advance through the bowl, but the train-plus-walk is genuinely the premium option here, not the compromise. January weather in Dallas is a lottery between shirtsleeves and a north-wind freeze; Ford Stadium is open-air, so decide by the forecast, not the stereotype.
The pairing, drawn from the Big 12, American, and Group of Five at-large pool, lands on Selection Sunday, December 6. This bowl’s booking rush is entirely matchup-dependent: a Texas-region team (a Big 12 school within driving distance, or a Metroplex-adjacent American program) fills Uptown fast, while two fly-in programs barely dent a hotel market as large as Dallas’s. The Metroplex has one of the biggest room inventories in the country, so you’ll always find a bed; what the refundable-early play protects is the good Uptown location at a pre-announcement rate. Book it now, decide on the 6th.

Ride the Red, Orange, or Blue line to SMU/Mockingbird station, then it's about a half-mile walk across Central Expressway to Gerald J. Ford Stadium. On SMU game days a shuttle has run from the station for anyone skipping the walk. A single ride is $3 and a day pass is $6.
Uptown Dallas is the best mix: McKinney Avenue's restaurant-and-bar strip, hotel depth at every price point, and a short hop to a Red/Orange line station for the train to SMU. Downtown works the same way with bigger convention hotels; both are 10-15 minutes from campus.
Mockingbird Station, directly across the highway, is a legitimate mini-neighborhood: shops, restaurants, a movie theater, and a hotel or two. Beds within an actual walk of Ford Stadium are scarce beyond that, which is why most fans base in Uptown or downtown and train in.
Selection Sunday, December 6, 2026, with the rest of the bowl slate. The game draws from the Big 12, American, and Group of Five at-large pool, so the booking rush depends heavily on whether a drivable Texas-region fan base lands in it.
A coin flip. Early January in Dallas can be 65 and sunny or 35 with a north wind, sometimes in the same week. Ford Stadium is open-air, so pack layers and check the forecast the week of the game rather than trusting the Texas brand.
