The Celebration Bowl opens the 2026-27 bowl calendar on Saturday, December 12, and it is not really a bowl game in the way the other 40-odd are. It’s the HBCU national championship, MEAC champion against SWAC champion, played in front of the season’s most complete fan weekend: the Band of the Year National Championship takes over the same Mercedes-Benz Stadium the night before, Friday, December 11. Noon kickoff Saturday on ABC. If you plan this as a Saturday day trip, you’re doing it wrong.
The weekend, not the game
Since the Celebration Bowl started in 2015, the event has grown into a two-day Atlanta takeover, and the bands are the organizing principle. Friday’s Band of the Year championship, in its fourth year as a stadium event, fills Mercedes-Benz with the best marching programs in HBCU football. Saturday, the bands come back with their teams, and the game’s halftime is the one show in college football where the concourses empty into the seats rather than the other way around. The Fifth Quarter, the postgame band battle, keeps the building loud after the scoreboard stops mattering.
For your itinerary, that means: arrive Friday morning or early afternoon, do both stadium events, fly out Sunday. Two hotel nights, everything downtown, no car.
Where to stay
Downtown, around Centennial Olympic Park. This is the answer for most fans. The cluster of hotels between the park and the stadium puts you a 10-minute walk from the gates and in the middle of the weekend’s fan traffic. It’s also the biggest hotel inventory in the Southeast, which is why even a big event weekend rarely locks the whole market. Book here if it’s your first Celebration Bowl; the walk to the stadium through the Friday and Saturday crowds is part of the event. Our year-round Mercedes-Benz Stadium hotel guide covers this pocket in more depth.
Midtown. One straight MARTA ride from the stadium stations, 10 minutes, with a better restaurant scene per block and typically softer weekend rates than the convention-district towers. The right call for groups who want dinner options beyond the tourist core.
The airport zone. Cheapest beds in the market, and MARTA makes it viable: the train runs from the airport through downtown, so an airport hotel is a 20-minute ride from the stadium stations. It’s the value play for fans driving in from across the Southeast who mostly need parking and a bed.
Vacation rentals earn their place here for one specific traveler: the alumni crew. Groups of six or eight doing the full weekend, with a Friday night and Saturday night and a tailgate to stage, will find West Midtown and Castleberry Hill rentals that beat three hotel rooms and put a kitchen in the middle of the operation. Solo travelers and couples should stay with a refundable hotel rate; two-night rental minimums plus cleaning fees erase the advantage at that size.
Getting there
Fly into Hartsfield-Jackson and skip the rental car entirely. MARTA runs from the airport station to downtown in about 20 minutes, and the stadium has two stations of its own, Vine City and GWCC/CNN Center, on the west side of the building. Driving in from the Southeast footprint, which is how a huge share of this crowd arrives, means paying for event parking around the stadium and Georgia World Congress Center or parking once at the hotel and walking the rest of the weekend. Park once. Downtown Atlanta traffic on an event Saturday is not where you want to spend the trip.
The noon kickoff is the one logistical trap. Gates and security lines on a Saturday morning move slower than the crowd expects, and if you want to see the bands march in, you’re aiming to be at the stadium by 10:30. Have breakfast plans that end early.
Booking mechanics for this one
The Celebration Bowl doesn’t wait for Selection Day. Its field is set by the MEAC and SWAC races, with the SWAC Championship Game in early December as the last domino, days before the December 12 kickoff. That’s a shorter fuse than any other bowl trip, and the fanbases that live within driving distance move fast once their team clinches.
So the play is to front-run it. If your team is in the conference race in mid-November, book a refundable downtown room for December 11 and 12 then, while rates are ordinary. Hold it through the championship games. If your team falls short, cancel free; if they’re in, you’re holding a walkable room while everyone else shops the leftovers. Mid-December is otherwise a quiet stretch for downtown Atlanta hotels, which is exactly why the early hold works: you’re buying before the only demand spike this weekend gets.

FAQ
Is the Celebration Bowl a one-day or two-day trip?
Treat it as two. The Band of the Year National Championship, the marching-band title event, plays Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Friday, December 11, and the football game kicks off Saturday, December 12 at noon ET on ABC. Most traveling fans book Friday and Saturday nights and make a full weekend of it.
Can you walk to Mercedes-Benz Stadium from downtown Atlanta hotels?
Yes. The hotel cluster around Centennial Olympic Park is roughly a 10-minute walk, and MARTA's Vine City and GWCC/CNN Center stations sit right at the stadium if you'd rather ride. From the airport, MARTA delivers you downtown in about 20 minutes without touching a car.
Should I leave at halftime if the game's a blowout?
Nobody does. The MEAC and SWAC bands are half the reason this game exists, and halftime is appointment viewing, not a concession run. Budget your snacks accordingly and stay in your seat.
When do we know which teams are playing?
When the MEAC and SWAC champions are decided at the end of the regular season, with the SWAC Championship Game the final piece in early December. That's a tighter window than most bowls, so fans of contending teams book refundable rooms in November rather than waiting.
Is December 12 an expensive hotel weekend in Atlanta?
By Atlanta standards, no. Downtown's convention calendar goes quiet in mid-December, and this date sits well clear of the New Year's crush around the Peach Bowl. Downtown compresses near the stadium for the weekend itself, but the citywide supply is enormous, so a fair rate is nearly always findable.
When is the 2026 Cricket Celebration Bowl?
Saturday, December 12, 2026; the Band of the Year National Championship plays the same stadium the night before (Friday, December 11). Kickoff is noon ET on ABC. Hotel demand still moves the moment the participating teams are selected in early December.
When should I book a hotel for the 2026 Cricket Celebration Bowl?
Book a refundable rate the day your team accepts the bid. Fan bases get roughly three weeks' notice, and Atlanta rates climb steadily from selection day to kickoff. Free-cancellation bookings let you lock today's price with no risk.
