In late December the river is dressed in its holiday lights, which run through the season and turn the postgame walk home into the best part of the night.

Southtown / King William. South of downtown, San Antonio’s historic mansion district and its adjacent arts strip. Boutique stays and rental houses, a genuine local food scene, and about a mile to the Dome — walkable for the willing, a five-minute ride otherwise.

The Pearl. The converted brewery district ten minutes north of downtown, home to the city’s best restaurant row. Wrong direction for the stadium, right direction for everything else; a fine base if you’ve done the River Walk before.

Within 48 hours of the reveal, the closest River Walk properties add two-night minimums — normal here, not a gimmick — and close out their discounted tiers. Your counter costs nothing: hold a refundable River Walk room now, in the quiet, and re-shop after the 6th. If your team’s path could also lead to a CFP bowl, hold both cities refundable until Selection Sunday; one free cancellation beats one panicked search.

Vacation rentals

San Antonio’s rental strength is exactly where visiting groups want it: Southtown and King William, where historic houses sleep six or eight within a mile of the Dome, routinely for less than two compressed River Walk rooms. For tailgate crews and families building the two-night trip this game demands, that’s the better deal — with the usual December caveats about cleaning fees on short stays and cancellation terms stiffer than a refundable hotel rate. Couples should just take the River Walk hotel; the location premium is the product.
