Mobile has hosted college football’s talent showcase, the Senior Bowl, for decades, so the town knows how to throw a football week. The 68 Ventures Bowl is its December edition: a Sun Belt–MAC matchup in one of the newest stadiums in the sport, in a walkable old port city where the pregame scene is a 300-year-old downtown instead of a parking lot. It’s also, quietly, the bowl trip with the strangest airport question of 2026 — worth two minutes of your attention before anything else.
Mobile’s commercial air service is in the middle of moving. The city built a new terminal at Mobile International Airport (BFM), on the Brookley Aeroplex five minutes from downtown, and it’s slated to open in fall 2026 — with Delta, United, and American transitioning over from Mobile Regional (MOB), the legacy airport 15 miles west of the city. Breeze already flies from BFM. A bowl game on December 26, 2026 lands squarely in the switch window, which means two fans on the same airline could theoretically fly into different airports weeks apart. Check the airport code on your ticket when you book and again before you fly. If you land at BFM, downtown is practically next door; if MOB, budget 25 minutes. Pensacola (PNS), about an hour east, is the backup with more nonstops, and it pairs naturally with the beach version of this trip.
Downtown Mobile (the answer). Dauphin Street’s historic district holds the city’s character hotels — restored 19th-century buildings, iron balconies, the whole Gulf-port look — plus the convention-center boxes along Water Street. Everything you want at night is on foot: Dauphin’s bar-and-restaurant strip, the Mardi Gras museum (Mobile’s carnival predates New Orleans’s, and locals will tell you within the hour), and the riverfront. The stadium is a 15–20 minute drive west. December 26 is a soft night in a modestly priced market, so this is one of the cheaper bowl weekends in the country to do well.
West Mobile (near the stadium). The chain-hotel corridors along Airport Boulevard and I-65 put you 5–10 minutes from campus. Practical, charmless, fine for a one-night football hit.
Gulf Shores / Orange Beach (the vacation version). An hour southeast, and in late December the beachfront towers rent at deep off-season discounts. Drive up for game day, spend the rest of the trip on the sand. More on this under rentals.
It’s a driving game day from any base — no transit worth mentioning — with parking in the on-campus lots around Hancock Whitney Stadium. The building opened in 2020, seats 25,450, and has the tight, loud feel of a new mid-sized stadium where every seat is close. Campus roads narrow to a few entry points, so leaving downtown 90 minutes before the 4:30 local kickoff is the comfortable margin. Postgame, downtown’s Dauphin Street strip is 20 minutes away and will be running; the day after Christmas is a real going-out night in Mobile.
The pairing lands on Selection Sunday, December 6. Mobile’s version of the 48-hour rush is modest but real: the Sun Belt footprint surrounds this city, and if a Louisiana, Mississippi, or in-state school draws the bid, the small historic-district hotel stock downtown goes first while the west-side chains absorb the rest. The flight is where December pricing actually bites, and the airport switch is one more reason to book air early and deliberately rather than late and confused.

But the rental market that makes this bowl special is an hour southeast: Gulf Shores and Orange Beach carry thousands of beachfront condos, and late December is their deepest discount season — multi-bedroom units on the sand for less than a city hotel room. For families and crews, a three-night Gulf condo with one game-day drive up I-10 and AL-59 is the best value itinerary anywhere on the December bowl calendar.
