Saturday’s Yankees-Nationals number was all about one arm. Sunday’s is about a missing one.
Our model has this finale leaning Washington — but when the sheet last refreshed, there was no Nationals starter locked on the card. No probable, no pitching adjustment, nothing. The number you see is running on pure baseline: ratings, home field, form. It’s a naked number, and naked numbers move.
What The Call sees
The Call has the Nationals at 51.1% — the model’s home-field baseline for this matchup, with the applied-factors row literally empty. New York’s Elo edge (1518 to 1502, eighth versus fourteenth in our ratings) is real but small, the Yankees are 4-6 over their last ten, and home field tips a 16-point gap the other way. That’s the whole calculation so far.
The one arm we do have listed: Will Warren (4.15 ERA, 3.96 FIP over 93.1 innings) for New York. If the Nationals’ starter posts and outclasses or underwhelms that line, watch our number swing the way Saturday’s did when Cam Schlittler’s name landed.
What could break the pick
Warren is the swing piece, and he’s trending the wrong way. Per Pinstripe Alley, Warren has carried a 5.34 ERA since May 1 after a strong start, and he’s been roughed up across his last several outings. His season-long FIP still grades fine — which is exactly why the model isn’t panicking — but slumping Warren against a 48-47 home team is a genuinely live underdog spot for Washington. The same preview lines up Cade Cavalli for the Nationals; until that locks on our sheet, the 51.1% stands as a coin flip with home cooking.
The series state matters too. New York took Friday 5-3, so Sunday is either a Yankees sweep bid or a rubber game, depending on Saturday — either way, a getaway day game at 1:35 with the All-Star break on the other side. Nobody’s saving bullets.
If you’re making the trip
Sunday at Nationals Park is the easy version of a DC baseball trip: Navy Yard hotel, ten-minute walk, day game, done in time for dinner or the ride home. Our Nationals Park guide has the neighborhood and transit playbook.
